The Bird is the Word!

In case you missed it, the Travers Stakes was run today, just before a monsoon engulfed Saratoga. Birdstone, Nick Zito’s mighty mite colt looked fantastic, notching another huge Grade I win over the best three year olds in the United States not named Smarty Jones. But ya know, as talented as Smarty was, I dunno if he wants anything to do with Birdstone on a fast track. Of course, we’ll never see that race, but hopefully Birdstone comes out of this race healthy and runs in the BC Classic against the top older horses. If he wins THAT, there’s your Horse of the Year, Smarty or no Smarty.

I know youre a big horsefan, so I knew youd have something here. I live 15 minutes south of Saratoga…and im surprised the rain held off so long. I have NEVER seen rain that hard…it was funny to see the ESPN people scrambling due to malfunctions. What surprises me about Birdstone is simply his size. He must be a few hands smaller than the average 3 yr old Grade I type horse, yet runs with all heart. It was an impressive race today, as Birdstone held off mighty surges from The Cliff’s Edge. And how bout Nick Zito? 1-2 in the race (not to mention Sir Shackleford in an outclassed race finishing 5th). Not bad for the kid from Brooklyn. Like you, I cant wait to see how the field looks for the Classic….should be a great race this year with the parity we have.

And a note from the cheap track up here the 250k Canadian Derby was run today, my family friends horse did not run well, early speed from him was a bad sign. The favorite, the Toronto shipper, Organ Grinder won but it was a staggering finish and he barely hung on over a longer shot. Wasn’t that impressive of a win for a horse that was suppose to be head and shoulder above what we have out here.

Yeah sorry about that PG. I know Organ Grinder. It was a good weekend for Grindstone runners.
