Err on the side of life, unless you get the death penalty

Thursday, March 31st, 2005

Time to go non sports for a minute:

I’m not here to pick sides about this single person’s life. I’m here to call out the hypocrisy of our President and House Majority Leader, Tom DeLay. The President of the United States today said that we should err on the side of life. Interestingly enough, this is the same guy who put to death more inmates in Texas than most anyone else. He also put one hell of a lot of troops in Iraq based on evidence that came out today which was “whoopsie”.

Tom DeLay today said that he would get the people responsible for Terri’s death. However, taking his dad off the ventilator was a ‘personal issue’.

Wow, so again, it’s right to life, but only when it makes sense to support the cause, eh? What happened today was awful. The whole circus is disgusting. I wasn’t there. I’m not a doctor, although I’m probably as qualified as Bill “you can get AIDS by shaking hands” Frist. No one knows what really happened, and you know what — we don’t need to know. It’s not our business. There was no crime, there was no need for Congress to stop everything and work on this.

Of course, by next Friday, no one will care, because there will be more testimony that Michael Jackson touched little boys. Either that or we’ll be having a debate about the Pope’s feeding tube. Wonder how that one will turn out.

City of Sorta Heroes!

Thursday, March 31st, 2005

I’ve been trying out City of Heroes the past couple of days. Most of these online RPGs have a 30 day grace period beore they start charging you–granted I ponied up $30 just to buy the thing, but still..

It’s a weird game. So far the best part is the hero creation system.

When I sat down to make a character I let Ashley (she’s 4) pick all of the features of our hero. I just described the stuff and she picked everything. She’s been on a superhero kick for a while now and we just got The Incredibles DVD and she’s a huge Frozone fan, so it was no surprise that she went with an ice based hero. We ended up with this:

  • 6′8 Female
  • Tank Archetype (tanks are brutes..think Hulk or Beast or The Thing)
  • Wears a Hood
  • Decked out in mostly pale blue
  • Wears a visor similar to Cyclops (we have no idea why, Ashley thought it looked “cool” (get it….she’s witty)
  • She has only melee attacks and can make her hands turn into solid ice
  • She also has a frost armor that she can summon at will

You can spend a long time customizing your hero. It’s really slick. When we were done, it was up to me to come up with a name. Ashley wanted Frozone (OK she’s not THAT witty) but we had to come up with something semi original.

I got it! Tundra!

Name taken. Try another.

The Yeti

Name taken. Try another.

The Glacier

Name taken. Try another.

Hmm.

Ashley suggests, “Frosty.”

Name taken. Try another.

Queen Frost

Name taken. Try another.

I type in Frostmane just for the hell of it.

Name accepted.

Now our hero doesn’t have anything like a mane…but hey at this point I was about to type in Dipshit McGoo just in hopes of it working.

So off we go to save the world!

We didn’t get out of the tutorial before it was time for me to start dinner, but it just feels odd to me. I’m a superhero–granted a new one, but still–SUPERHERO. In tge tutorial you get to smack around stationary targets to get used to the combat controls.

Frostmane had several misses when attacking…a stationary target. What kind of superhero did we create? She can’t hit a tackling dummy let alone a real bad guy. So we do the tutorial and get used to how to play and we get to enter Paragon City as a level one hero. Upon entering, we see literally dozens of other heroes running around the city. There are more heroes than regular people. It’s just weird. It also breaks the illusion when you see heroes named “I Rock” or “I am the Man.” I would frown upon this but after going through the naming process…hey whatever works, kid.

After running around a bit and missing level one thugs we logged off to play Pooh Bear V-Smile. Maybe we’ll return to Paragon City tomorrow. Or maybe we’ll just play more WoW.

Fun and Games, U2 and more

Wednesday, March 30th, 2005

First off, just a note about Bill’s PSP post. I certainly understand what he is saying, but you have to appreciate how amazing this PSP is…and besides, for those times you’re sitting on the john, what’s wrong with a little multiplayer online gaming? Just watch out for your legs getting numb. Also, when you are bedridden and say, are having trouble breathing, the PSP really comes in handy. Furthermore, when your 5 year old wants to watch Full House for the 234324098th time and wants you to stay in the same room which happens to be otherwise gameless, the PSP makes for a fine companion.

I just read the review for the U2 concert in San Diego. All I can say is, October can’t come soon enough (I have tickets for the October show). Apparently they do Electric Co, An Cat Dubh, and Zoo Station….and they brought back 40 to end the show. That is going to be one good show.

New Lost tonight. New Alias tonight. USA Today says Eyes at 10pm is also pretty good. Amercian Idol’s drop off show is tonight as well, and a USA World Cup game. Damn. Thank god for 2 tivos and the 2 tuner cable company DVR. Hopefully the US will do better than they did vs Mexico. That game blew chunks.

While checking out IGN, I see that Splinter Cell Chaos Theory got high reviews (big surprise) and so did the new Time Splitters game. However, reading the first page of the Time Splitters review, you wonder how it got a 9.0, becuase the writing makes it sound like the game is a turd. A friend of mine on ICQ just posted to me about Chaos Theory: “the knife kills are fucking brutal kidney ruptures, throat slashes, armpit jabs. just makes you feel like this twisted spy version of ol’ Jack without the hookers and all.” (Jack the Ripper he’s talking about). Damn, that sounds so gross, I’m going to have to pick that one up before Congress complains…

Quick Update

Tuesday, March 29th, 2005

Sorry for the lack of stuff from me of late. I’m scheduled to go see the doc Thursday; I think I may have an ulcer. Lots of personal stuff going on in Ye Ol Abner House right now so it’s not that shocking that it’s having an impact on me I suppose. I’d be more specific but, well, let’s face it: how well do I know you?

So here’s a few random thoughts for the day before I get back to sitting on the couch with Ashley to play some more Spiderman 2:

* All this PSP stuff….I just don’t get it. Maybe this is a branch of gaming that is just over my head but when did it get to be so important to have access to games 24/7 and while in your car? If there is some hook that I’m just not seeing please fill me in.
* I’m currently working on the active work list. Imperial Glory is getting some time right now. In short, if you played and enjoyed the Total War games (Shogun, Medieval, Vikings, Rome) this is like that, only in the era of Napoleon. Pretty cool so far but it lacks some of the polish of the TW series.
* I have been assigned World Tour Soccer for the PS2 to review. Is that a good thing?
* I’ve moved to a PvP server in WoW. I’m now on Tichondrius as a level 18 undead rogue. Rogues are a blast to play.
* Has anyone played City of Heroes or Star Wars Galaxies? I read the reviews and I know that SWG got beat up by the press at launch, but is it still a dog? Seeing as how Ashley has turned into a 4 year old superhero, I think I may grab City of Heroes instead. I can’t believe I have turned into a MMO fan. Maybe I’m missing this PSP thing after all…
* Lastly, does anyone still watch Carnivale? If so, holy shit was that a good fina 3 episodes or what?

Anyway, I need some milk. This stomach thing is very uncool.

Sony sent over Untold Legends for me for review for the PSP. Aside from the brief period of me vomiting earlier (I’m sick), I haven’t put this game down. I don’t understand the harsh reviews this game is getting — basically getting hit because it’s a ‘diablo clone’. Well, if you want to play Diablo but on a handheld, there’s nothing better than this game. It’s a sleeper hit in my book, which is typical because why would I believe all the pre-release reviews. Gah!

Like I said, today hasn’t been a good day for me. My son was diagnosed with an ear infection last week, so I had to stay home with him, and he repaid me by coughing on me non-stop. I think I could feel the virus attack me. Since then, although I haven’t had it for say, 22 years, my asthma has kicked in full effect. Barely able to breathe, coughing like I smoke 3 packs a day, which then led to the aforementioned vomiting. Interestingly enough, after the vomit, I felt 10 times better (oh yeah, I didn’t know tomato sauce becomes pink in your stomach. Interesting side note, don’t you think)?

So although my head feels better, my breathing still isn’t good. When I called the doctor at 11 am this morning, the earliest they could get me in was 9 am tomorrow. I’m like, but I can’t breathe!!!

Oh well, I guess I can breathe, just not well. My peak flow meter readings have hit all time lows. This is not fun, but I can still play games, so I guess it could be worse. Off to the doctor in the AM. Toodles.

"No, not a buh. A bomb."

(It’s never the wrong time to quote Airplane.)

Well, I had hoped to get a post in before blowing town for a long weekend in Michigan, but travel prep consumed every spare moment. The bowling outing at work was a great time, though I didn’t get the results I’d hoped for. The first two games followed last year’s script, with a 175 and 200 with just one open frame in the first game. Like last year there was a sense (for me) that I’d either put it all together or collapse utterly. But instead of running off a bunch of strikes my game went out the window. First two frames were both good pocket shots that left solid 10s, which I promptly missed (choked). Then a split. A strike. Another missed 10-pin. Another split. Ended up with a 139, followed by a 155. Ouch. Still a fun time, though and that’s all that mattered.

On Thursday we bounded up to Michigan for our last trip to see our various families before our second kid arrives (due May 9th). We also had a date with the Pistons/Pacers game on Friday night at the Palace of Auburn Hills. If you watch ESPN or read the sports page you probably already know that it was quite an unusual evening. The game was slated to tip off at 8:00. At around 7:30 they announced the game would be delayed due to unforeseen circumstances. So, in our perches in the second to last row in the building (there’s no such thing as a bad seat at the Palace) we waited. And waited. Then we waited some more.

After about 45 minutes they put the Michigan St/Duke game up on the jumbotron, which made a lot of people happy. (Congrats Spartans!) I took this as a sign we weren’t going to see any live basketball anytime soon, so I dug out my cell phone and called my dad to find out what was up. Shouldn’t have been much of a shock that the game was delayed because some asshat phoned in a bomb threat. Despite the lack of an announcement, it was probably the worst kept secret in the building given that I was surely not the only one to phone for answers from the outside. I also learned that even when you whisper “bomb threat?” into your cell phone everyone within three feet turns to look at you. And I doubt everyone else with a cell was that discrete. By the time the game got started a lot of the air had gone out of the place, which matched the Pistons game pretty well. Wow, were they bad.

This is one of those teams that you know pretty quickly if you’re in for a long night. When they start jacking up a lot of perimeter shots, don’t pass the ball around, and don’t shut down the paint on the defensive end, you know it’s going to be a struggle. At one point in the 3rd (4th?) quarter the Pacers took them to the paint on three straight layups that were all but uncontested. Ugly, ugly, ugly. Almost as ugly as Reggie Miller’s postgame comments:

“We’ve been penalized so much this year, and our team, and nothing has ever happened to the Pistons or The Palace or even the city of Detroit. It’s almost like it’s always our fault. The league knows it, and the league ought to be ashamed of themselves to let security be as lax as it is around here… David Stern has to take a hard look in the mirror every morning when he wakes up on his decision, the way he penalized us and the way he penalized the Pistons.”

Seriously, as an Indiana resident I feel compelled to pull for the Pacers whenever they don’t play the Pistons. I’ve gone to several of their game and pulled for them wire to wire and I was tuned in when they reached the Finals a few years ago against the Lakers. But this has been a tough year to root for them to do well. Ever since the brawl, not just the team but a whole lot of the fans in this city have taken on this defeatist, it’s all their fault, we’re the real victims attitude. Ben Wallace may just be public enemy number one around here.

And it’s absolutely insane.

Did Ben Wallace charge into the stands and attack a fan? No. Ron Artest did. And Stephen Jackson did. And they weren’t even attacking the guy who threw the cup. You want to talk about victims? Talk to the fans in the stands who got pummeled because they happened to be on the olympic standing there team when these two dopes decided to pick a few people out of the crowd to vent their righteous indignation. And somehow we’re supposed to overlook the fact that Artest was able to shrug off a shove in the face from Ben Wallace, but had too much pride to be disrespected by a nameless, faceless drunken fan who clipped him with a plastic up?

And don’t tell me the Pistons and Detroit haven’t been penalized. Last I checked, it wasn’t Indianapolis that once again became a national punchline just when it was starting to improve its image. Somehow I don’t think some dickhead phoning in a bomb threat is going to do wonders for the team’s or the city’s image either. Lax security? You’re a great player Reggie, a hall of famer, but if you think security was lax on Friday night you’re a bigger idiot than I ever thought possible. The threat was made specifically to the Pacers locker room. According to the press reports, that room had already been screened and secured well before the game as part of routine security measures. They got a threat less than an hour from tip-off and rather than say, “We already checked it out,” Palace officials decided to be cautious and they double-checked everything. That’s what you’re supposed to do. It was anything but “lax.” As the Detroit News’s Chris McCosky wrote, “That building was sealed tightly enough for a presidential visit.”

Reggie - Your team isn’t fighting for an 8th seed in the playoffs right now because of the brawl or the bomb threat. It’s fighting for it because until recently it hasn’t been playing good basketball and too many of your guys won’t shut up about the frigg’n brawl. The Jackson and O’Neal suspensions ended months ago. You didn’t start winning when they stepped back on the floor. Or am I supposed to believe that just having Artest in the lineup would suddenly turn your guys into the Heat or Spurs?

Yeah, it was easier for the Pistons to move on with their season. Guess what? The Pistons players weren’t the ones attacking paying customers in the stands. Artest and Jackson got what they deserved. Yeah, O’Neal’s suspension was harsh, in my opinion. Any fan traipsing onto the court is free meat as far as I’m concerned. Was the fat f-er O’Neal laid out a threat to the players? Maybe. Maybe not. But it was pandemonium in the building and in a world where Monica Seles gets stabbed in the back in the middle of a tennis match I’ve got no truck with O’Neal knocking the snot out of any idiot fan who thinks he can take advantage of a distracted arena security force to go for a stroll on the hardwood.

When we were in the stands all of the folks I sat near concluded it had to be a Pacers fan who phoned in the bomb threat. I mean, really, what kind of Pistons fan threatens to blow up his own team’s building? We probably should’ve known better. But then, so should Reggie before making those kinds of ignorant, asinine comments to the press. While I’ve had my share of beefs with some of Jermaine O’Neal’s public comments in the past few months I have to at least give him some props. Despite being injured he made the trip to Detroit and spoke up in defense of the city and its fans. After talking about how plenty of Pistons fans had wished him luck and a fast recovery from his shoulder injury, he went on to say, “For somebody to do that, I think that is extremely unfair, not only to our team, but it’s unfair to the city. There’s a lot of good fans out here in Detroit. For some stupid person to call and do that, the people in Detroit should be mad at that person.”

Well, put. And speaking as a Pistons fan who was at the game, I am mad. I hope the bastard who made the call is found and hung up for a public flogging. But I also hope somebody throws a muzzle over Reggie Miller. A great player who too often doesn’t know when to just shut the hell up. If he wants to whine so much, he should do what the rest of us do: Start a blog.

Various stuff…

Monday, March 28th, 2005

1. PSP screen is fantastic, still not able to connect on the network..to recap that’s 3 days of attempts and one valid game.

2. Apparently, Sony has been banned from selling PlayStations/PlayStation 2s due to the fact that their controller ‘vibration’…uh well, let’s say they stole the ideal. Here’s the article (yes, there’s a stay in the order until the appeal comes out, but still…banning the sale of the console vs just changing the controller seems harsh)

3. Did I mention how frustrating not connecting to the PSP online is?

Saturday Fun

Saturday, March 26th, 2005

Happy Saturday…the sun is out here and continues to melt the snow. I think we are down to 23 feet left, so that’s a plus.

After I blogged last night, I finally was able to play one online game of Twisted Metal on my PSP. There was no lag and it was a lot of fun (they even have cooperative mode). Unfortuantely that was the sole time I was able to get on.

Over and over again, the connection drops. Like I said before, I’m literally right in front of the access point, so I know it’s not my connection. This *could* be very cool, but it blows as it stands. That being said, taking a look at the official sony boards, I guess a lot of their 989 games are online enabled, but from what I hear they are all crap, with the exception of soccer, which of course is NOT online enabled. MLB isn’t out yet so I’m hoping maybe I’ll pick that one up.

Spies have told me that MVP Baseball is looking and playing just like the PS2 version of the game…with one early exception — it’s crashing like crazy. Still, it’s a beta, and I’m sure it will be fixed with the final release. EA only screws up the back of the box and never the game, right? :)

Oops! EA Sucks Again

Friday, March 25th, 2005

One of the reasons I bought Tiger Woods was becuase on the back of the box it says (Wi-Fi Compatible (Ad-Hoc/Infrastructure). For those that don’t speak PSPglish, Ad-Hoc means PSP-to-PSP and Infrastructure means you can play online with a wireless connection.

Of course, this is horseshit. A quick look at the EA Support site says…

“Unfortunately, there are no PSP titles at this time that support any online play. There has been a misprint on all of the boxes for our launch titles and this mode is not supported. Although Infrastructure mode is not supported, the Ad Hoc multiplayer mode will work on all of our launch titles provided that each player has their own copy of the game.”

Well, first off Twisted Metal is supposed to support online, so that’s a lie. Of course if you were stupid like me and also bought that game, by ‘online’ they mean the cute WiFi light flashes a lot, you can go into the lobby but then you’ll disconnect for some reason. I’m at 100% signal and literally 2 feet from the wireless access point. I am using 128bit WEP for security, but it says 100% signal and no problems, so WTF.

Seroiusly, PSP online makes SegaNet for NFL2K1 look like a T3 line. This freakin blows. Has anyone played a game online with Twisted Metal? Please comment on it. I could be doing something wrong, but I doubt I could get to the lobby if that were the case….

Weekend Update

Friday, March 25th, 2005

Well, I found out that CC.com does allow you to return to the store, but you have to return the entire ‘bundle,’ so I can’t just open up Wipeout Pure, otherwise I’ll have bought the entire package. Yikes. Thankfully I did find this out ahead of time.

Guess I’ll use my 10% off at Sam Goody and use it there on stuff. I guess I gotta get Wipeout, based on GameRankings’ reviews.

In other news, Soccer’s best rivalry heats up, USA vs Mexico in a World Cup Qualifier on Sunday. Baseball has Red Sox-Yankees, and this is up there. As you probably don’t remember, the USA shocked Mexico last World Cup in a 2-0 win, so this one should be interesting…if only it was in HD like the Honduras game was (thanks HDNet!)….

Back to Idol for a moment — I love the way they play the ‘theme song snippet’ when you’re eliminated. Normally, the theme song is saved for when you win (see Price is Right), but on Idol, it’s hey, your journey ends tonight, you really sucked — cue the theme music! Just an odd time to play it if you ask me…

Hey, between my last post and this one, Tiger Woods finally loaded. It’s a good game. Too bad it takes too damn long to load (for PSP). Oh yeah, is there also a federal law that requires Sony to make long names for their equipment? It’s not a flash memory card. It’s a memory stick duo 32MB. Why not add Memory Adaptor (Network/Modem) (For PlayStation Portable) (32MB) to the end of it. Gah!

More on the PSP and American Idol

Friday, March 25th, 2005

While, uh, ‘indisposed’ I played some Tiger Woods this morning. The load times aren’t as bad as I originally implied, but it’s still not ‘fast’. The game itself is excellent. It’s very much like the console version of the game, and that’s a compliment.

I played some lumines. Still, part of me is like, I paid $250 + $40 for Tetris deluxe? But it is a good game. Even though CC hasn’t shipped my unit, I’m going to return it when it gets here and use the gift card for some more games. Sam Goody sent me a 15% off PSP stuff coupon, so I may go use that and get Ridge Racer and/or Wipeout Pure, as I hear those games are very good.

I will not buy card based ‘action’ games, but geez, all I can choose from is EA games. So much for that boycott.

Luckily Gamefly does rent PSP games. I have yet to even try Star Fox Assault so I haven’t sent that back……going to be a busy weekend of setting up the new laptop for the Mrs, and game playing. Should be fun, but I gotta get through the real job today first. LOL

In American Idol news, no real surprise there. Fans shrieked at Nadia going into the bottom, but I believe it’s well deserved. She sucked.

Now..That’s a Patch?

Thursday, March 24th, 2005

Ya know it figures. I give a company respect for issuing a large content patch and when I do…the servers go to hell. All day Tuesday WoW was pretty much down and ever since then the second server I play on (a PvP - player vs player) server has been totally FUBAR. Great.

A Crimson Stag update: He tried the grass for the first time Saturday and ran like hell. He finished 7th (I think..maybe 8th) - it was by far his worst showing to date. The camp isn’t that upset. Some horses simply do not take to the turf and the jock came back and said he was slipping all over the track and blew both turns. So we’re pretty much just scratching that race off and moving forward. He came back healthy, which is the important thing.

I don’t watch SportsCenter. I cannot remember the last time I actually sat down and watched an entire 60 SC from start to finish. I really hate ESPN so I only watch the channel when I have to. So I missed the whole Barry Bonds interview. I had heard about it on the radio but I didn’t see it until last night watching of all things — The Daily Show. What kind of prickface drags his KID ON SCREEN and says to look at how you have hurt my family. Barry Bonds might just be the biggest prick in the history of sports. Now, by prick I mean jerk, ass, and generally unpleasant to be around. Ty Cobb, so I read, was quite the prick. You jump into the stands and beat up a parapalegic…that’s a major prick-able offense. There are obviously many others who fit into the prick category, but Bonds seems to go out of his way to piss people off. He’s racist, I think he’s a cheater, and wants to blame everyone else for his foibles. Turns out he even has a mistress. Well done, Bar. Very pricklike.

Dreamcast Light Gun anyone?

Thursday, March 24th, 2005

Howdy, my son broke my Starfire Light Gun for the Dreamcast. As you know, Interact is now defunct and I’m not having any luck finding a gun that works with the US dreamcast anywhere.

I was wondering if anyone out there in blog land would have a working US Dreamcast gun lying around. I could trade you ESPN MLB for the Xbox new, sealed if you like…..

I bought a PSP..just gotta wait

Thursday, March 24th, 2005

Well, at 8:30 AM today, Circuit City.com posted their PSP bundle. Yes, it’s bundle hell. But unlike all the other bundles I’ve seen that make you buy shitty games you get Tony Hawk, Wipeout and Twisted Metal. Probably one of the better bundles I’ve seen. I used my Simple Rebates account to get 1% back and used my gift card that I had with my TV plus used my cash rebate credit card so I got the $379 package down quite a bit.

It’s very difficult for me to NOT buy one of these things..the only drawback is that because I bought it online, I couldn’t do instore pick up and overnight was $65, so I won’t have it for a week. Gah.

Oh well, at least I’ll have it.

UPDATE: Best Buy.com is now offering just the unit for $249.99. Of course you know you are going to get games, so there you go.
