Twenty Friggin Years
While watching the news tonight, something was brought to my attention. I am now old.
On this day in 1986, the space shuttle Challenger exploded. To me this was my first ‘you remember where you were’ moment. Warwick Veterans Memorial High School, freshman year. Although Rhode Island isn’t New Hampshire, pretty much everybody in New England watches the Boston TV stations, so everyone knew (through TV) Christa McAuliffe. And of course being in high school and having a high school teacher die in the space shuttle, well it was kind of relatable in an odd sort of way.
The thought that it has been 20 years when I can remember it yesterday is just really a very depressing thought. Sure I can remember my first Atari 2600, on 12/24/1979, but I was a kid, so while it was 26 years ago, it does NOT feel like it was yesterday. This does.
I am just Mr. happy aren’t I. Dan Downer it is!

I was in the Army at the time and remember just having come off guard duty when I heard. Even though I was exhausted, I spent the whole next day glued to the television. Horrible day…

I also was a freshman the year that occurred. I remember it distinctly because Cleveland Ohio had an earthquake around that same time.. There I was sitting in class, when we heard this low rumble, and the building started to shake. Nobody had a clue what happened, until the TV news reported the quake. Probably the first and last earthquake Cleveland will experience in my life.
