Sports traditions

So, I was at the Wisconsin hockey game tonight and one of the traditions that is observed at all Wisconsin sports, at least all of the major sports, is that the crowd sings a song called ‘Varsity‘ in between the 2nd and 3rd periods of the game. At football and basketball games, it is sung at half time, and the song is always sung after the game… win or lose.

So, my question is, what traditions are observed at your teams games? It doesn’t matter if it’s a college or pro game, I’m just curious as to what other traditions are out there for other teams. Oh, and don’t mention the stupid “Incomplete” B.S. that the Broncos do. I hate that crap.

When John Bunting (football coach and was fired after this season) was at Carolina, he would always go to the student section and sing the school song, win or lose. He was an alum though. I really doubt Butch Davis will do that.

At LSU football games, we have the pre-game that is done before every home game. The pre-game song is also played at the end of the third quarter. Whenever the LSU defense forces a 4th down or gets a turnover, Chinese Bandits is played (I guess it’s kind of racist, now that I think about it, but it was the 60s when it was used and is what the defense at the time was called. The song has an oriental sound to it).

Cornell hockey games are full of tradition. Lynah rink is the Cameron Indoor of college hockey. Probably one of the best and more infamous traditions is that when we play Harvard at home, the crowd throws dead fish on the ice when Harvard comes out to start the game.

In Baltimore we always play “Thank God I’m a Country Boy” by John Denver during the seventh inning stretch. Not sure where it came from, but hearing other fans screaming out the lyrics in Dundalk accents is something that will always remind me how much I love that city.

The one thing that I got from a Cornell team was hearing them yell out ‘RED’ during the National Anthem when the Badgers played them last year. I don’t know why that stuck with me. Perhaps it’s because of the fact that it was an incredibly good hockey game as well.

Clemson plays Tiger Rag a LOT. Just ask Dan :)

However, my Tigers’ entrance to Death Valley has been described as the “most exciting 25 seconds in college football”.

And don’t forget all Orioles fans say the “O” in O say does that Star Spangled Banner Yet Wave..

I remember, way back in 1995 when the Orioles were good and it was easy to get tickets at Fenway Park, how wonderful it was to hear teh “O” then.

Of course now it’s the other way around, but I have faith that order will be restored.
