MLB 2K7 Thoughts

Well, it sure does play like last year’s game, looks a ton better and the play by play is impressive. In the demo, you play 3 innings of the Cards-Mets Game 7 from last year’s NLCS.

The mechanics are very much the same as last year. I’m not sure if I like it or not…but it feels like quite an improvement over last year’s disaster. Fielding balls in the outfield is still difficult, and you have to use speed burst.

They’ve got all the details like LF and RF umpires and they call fair/foul/Home runs, which is nice. Even cute touches like fans catching foul balls are in the game which are impressive. The gameplay is fair….I don’t have the same sort of High Heat Wow feeling as I had with, say high heat, but still they seem to have done a nice job.

I love the scorecards, that is a nice touch.

So, I’m not sure right now if I did do the right thing by pre-purchasing the game (remember I did this before my new resolution started)…I’m thinking I might play SSX Blur more….but there is potential for this game. Curious to hear Bill and Glen’s thoughts on it.

One other thing that it took an insane amount of time to download. I started at 10AM and it just finished. I think it’s due to numerous school vacations and blizzards so everyone was downloading.

The graphics are very impressive…did I mention that?

I didn’t get a chance to play 2K6 last year, so I’m coming into this game fresh, but I was pretty impressed with my time in the demo.

I found fielding to be very difficult as well and couldn’t even get close to making a play in the OF, but I thought I might be able to in time.

I really enjoy the pitching interface. Once I got the hang of it, I was painting the black of the plate. Also, I made a few mistakes and ended up sending a couple pitches past the catcher and plunked a few hitters when I was tired.

Batting seemed pretty challenging, but I managed a few hits in the 3 inning outing and figured that with some time I’d get the hang of it.

I’ll be renting this one for sure. I enjoyed the demo enough to be certain of that.

The 3/4 view fielding is probably what is going to kill the game for me. The pitching interface is fine, but I’ve never been a fan of hitting with the swing stick. I switched it to “classic” mode, but it is still difficult to judge where the ball is going. It is also difficult to tell where the ball is immediately after someone makes contact. Also, there are some weird physics going on in the outfield when the ball hits the gap-almost like a golfball on concrete or something.

The whole pay for a “scouting report” thing kills me too. I know they are trying to add some kind of incentive for people, but you’re trying to tell me that Major League Teams don’t have immediate access to where to pitch regular major league hitters?

That said, it is a nice looking game-didn’t Brinkman say this is only “year one” of the three year plan? Guess they have those pesky gameplay issues to work out later next year.

Unfortunately, according to some on Operation Sports who got the game today, “The Show” is plagued with some sort of slowdown issue when trying to field the ball. Not sure why they messed with a great thing there.
