Sunday Musings

1. Don’t forget that Cal’s induction ceremony will be televised live on ESPN Classic.

2. The circular round up is kinda lame this week. The good news is that Super Mario Strikers is shipping for the Wii and should be in stores (not shipping) Tuesday. The even better news is that Circuit City is running a special that if you buy two Xbox accessories priced at $19.99 or higher, they’ll take $20 off. So basically, buy that 13 month Live subscription and get 1600 MS points for free. Or get 3200 points for $20. One word of warning though: the online store doesn’t show the 1600 points card as qualifying for the discount. Go figure.

3. My daughter’s 3 year old HP laptop has shit the bed so I’m looking for a real cheap notebook that has current technology (ie Celeron M ok, Pentium II is not). Best I can find is $499 from Best Buy and it’s a pretty good system. Can some of the geeks out there tell me why I should buy (for me not for her) a Quad core over a dual core? Is the price/performance worth it?

4. HDDVD: WTF? BB and CC re both showing $34.99 for the HDDVD version of 300, while the BD version is $29.99. I hear there’s more content on HDDVD but still $34.99? Target does have it for $29.99 so maybe I’ll go there. Of course I should just rent it which probably makes the most sense.

5. CC has a 4GB memory stick for $69.99. Pretty good deal I think.

6. Mitt Romney is advertising up here, and his new ad is so Republican, I’m going to vomit. It has a kid on the beach and Mitt’s voiceover implies that this kid will be tainted by violent videogames. When will these idiots realize it’s the parents that have the control. If I want to play an M or AO rated game, I should be able to play it. I will not let my kids play an M or AO rated game. I do let them play T games, my 7 year old loves Call of Duty and I do not think he’ll go out and shoot people. He does like playing Army and I believe that when I was 7 we did stuff like that too. I actually think he’s become more creative and knows the difference between video game and reality. I’m so glad that Mr. Romney will tell me what is right for my family. Thank you so much, dickwad. Next thing you know he’ll be regulating gay marriage while he has 23 wives. And oh btw, we’ve had enough guys running for President from Massachusetts. I think we’re all set there.

7. Phew. I know I was ranting again. Sorry.

    Go Dan, it’s your birthday!

    Re: Circuit City…

I know that in the past, Best Buy has considered the 1600 pt card as being a video game accessory. For a while, there was a gift card you could buy at BB that came with a 5 buck off coupon for games or game accessories. You could buy the card, put 5 bucks on it and then use the coupon to get 1600 pt cards for 15 bucks. Wahey!

    How’s the eye?

Walmart.com has 300 on hddvd for 27.88 (bd 23.88 >_< ) They also have a feature called site to store which is basically free shipping from walmart.com to any walmart store for free. So you can get it cheaper online then in the box store and pay no shipping.

That’s weird, traditionally it’s always been Republicans who have been against the nanny state, saying that it was parents’ responsibility to raise their kids and not the government’s, etc. That’s why all the early proponents of video game censorship were Democrats: Joe Lieberman, Hillary Clinton, Leland Yee…

When did the Republicans turn into such…Democrats? It used to be the Democrats who were corrupt, who were big spenders, who were in favor of pork, who said that government could solve our problems and keep us safe if we just let them run our lives. Now the Republicans are that way. Ron Paul’s the only guy in the lineup who I’d even think about voting for, and this is coming from a dyed-in-the-wool non-Democrat.

The reason the HD-DVD version costs more is that it’s a combo disc, with both HD-DVD and DVD versions of the movie.

However, the DVD release comes on 2 discs, not to mention there is a special edition which probably has more. So the DVD layer on the combo disc probably is missing stuff in the DVD, which is only $14.99.

But the dirty little secret is that HD-DVD touts how much easier and cheaper it is to replicate and yet, it doesn’t even have a price advantage over Blu-Ray. So studios are making a bit better margins on HD-DVD than Blu-Ray discs. Yet more studios support Blu-Ray.

Democrats and Republicans are both very proficient at what they do, which is extorting contributions to protect the interests of the donors.

It’s governing for the good of the country that they haven’t shown they can do.
