Happy Gaming Day

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

As promised, Sony put out Warhawk online at 12:01AM. Rather than pay for the download, I opted for the retail version because $20 for a bluetooth headset is cheap. Of course it hasn’t shown up at GameStop yet. Grrrrr..

I did get Carnival games and Metroid though…and I’d probably rather have them first anyway…at least that’s the way I’m going to spin it…..

Non Gaming Fun With Politics

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

Well, Gonzales has quit and Bush said his name was dragged in the mud for political reasons. You’re kidding me right? Is our President that ignorant? This guy seemed to be a flat out liar to Congress, yet it’s political mud slinging? Um, ok…

And how about this Idaho senator…the first thing is..why did this come out now as opposed to two months ago when it happened — very odd. And how could a Senator not think something like this was a big deal. Even someone from Idaho should know better :).

It just seems to be a bizarro world in Washington DC….

Back in action

Monday, August 27th, 2007

Sorry that I forgot to mention that I was going out of town for the weekend. I took the family up to International Falls to spend some time with my wife’s family for a few days. My wife spent the day with her mom, and I spent the day on the lake fishing with my Father-in-law. What was shocking was the fact that I was actually catching fish. It’s like the fish didn’t care that I was from Wisconsin. Amazing.

Anywho…back to the news.

1. Alberto Gonzales resigns… Now they just need to undo the shit that he did while he was in office.

Is anyone going to be around the White House to help Bush lock up when he’s done?

2. Why hasn’t the Gamestop lady called to tell me that Metroid Prime 3 is in stock? IGN said they traveled the Galaxy or something to find out if the game is good. I just wish Dan could write as well as the IGN guys do.

3. I’m going to run out to my Cell phone vendor today to see if I can pick up a Motorola Q. I’ve talked to a few people in the area who have the phone who really like it, so I’m going to give it a go. Now I just have to decide if I want to buy Warhawk to get another Bluetooth headset, as I’ll keep my old one for my new phone and then I could give the Warhawk one to my wife. I’m such a nice husband.

4. I saw in the newest Games for Windows magazine that there is a rumor that 2K Sports will be making a PC baseball game next year. Has anyone else heard anything about this? This is the first I had heard about a PC baseball game in a few years.

5. I’m giving up on Gamefly, it took 6 days for them to receive my last game. I just can’t deal with the hassle anymore. It’s funny that Dan had problems with Netflix though, I’ve never had a movie take more than 2 days to get to me.

6. Sorry I missed the draft the other day. Looks like the Gamefly Haters turned out ok though.

Madden Reviews

Monday, August 27th, 2007

A few Shark updates of note today.

Dan’s Wii review is up.

As is my 360 review.

Dan’s latest TWID notes was posted over the weekend, actually, and I also forgot to plug the latest Cracked LCD, which talks about an old game called Space Crusade.

A few other items of note: BioShock for the PC officially owns me. Even on my middling PC it runs fine so far (2.4 Ghz, gig of ram and a GeForce 6800 Ultra). It’s a giddy sort of fun that I don’t get from games as much as I used to. BioShock is the real deal. Hopefully it won’t be a repeat of the sad tale of System Shock 2 which is still unquestionably a top 5 game of all time but didn’t sell like one. This one deserves to sell enough units to make up for that consumer gaffe.

Played my first game of Tide of Iron and the first game with real people in the Egyptian auction game: Ra (I had played a solo game to learn the rules.) Both are great fun but in wildly different ways. A weekend of BioShock and some boardgames involving Tiger tanks and an Egyptian god.

Not bad.

Great Moments in Own Goal History

Sunday, August 26th, 2007

Back in the day (1998) when I was a Revolution Season Ticket Holder and part of the Midnight Riders, they published a magazine (fanzine) called Pictures of Chairman Mao, which was the funniest magazine I’ve read in a long time. I still cry to this day when I pick up one of the old publications becuase they are so funny. I remember one day they were organizing a bus trip to NY for the MetroStars game and they had a big photograph that said “Great Moments in MetroStars History” which was a picture of Nicolai Caricola (I probably mangled his name, sorry) scoring an own goal against the Revs giving them a 2-1 win. Eric Spurlock and Evan Whitney, whereever you are, that article was hysterical

Well last night in an episode of history repeating itself, Carlos Mendez tried to do a backpass that the NY GK missed, scoring a goal. It’s another greatest goal ever…it’s been a while since I’ve seen an own goal like this. And the fact it’s NY against NE makes it even grander. Click here and scroll down to : 08/25: Mendes Own Goal decides match. Good times!

Anyway, I forgot to mention that Tiger Woods comes out this week. So there you go.

Saturday Night Thoughts

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

1. Nice to finally see 90 degrees, although my vacation ends tomorrow. I did enjoy the day though.
2. On Wednesday, I got a ‘for Thu’ email from Netflix. On friday, still no movie but I got one of their surveys, the ‘when did you receive the movie’ type of emails. Still nothing today. Whenever I receive the survey I think they think “hey maybe we can close that really close by distribution center and mail them from California” instead. Who do they think they are, Gamefly? LOL. Kinda wanted the movie before the kids started school but that’s not going to happen now.
3. Woke up this morning, and was shocked to see the demo for MoH: Airborne. Grabbed that one pretty quick. Love it! Can’t wait for the CoD 4 demo Monday (oops, multiplayer limited beta, whatever).
4. Glen, back when he would log in for fantasy drafts, etc, often lamented about next Tuesday being a busy one for games. Well one by one they seem to be getting knocked off schedule. MoH got bumped to September, Stranglehold got bumped too. Good news is Metroid and WarHawk are still on schedule. There are just too many damn games to play. I keep buying them thinking I’ll have time. I never do. Then they stay in shrinkwrap and are now worth $4.99 at EB.
5. Finally got my Nintendo Power. Guess the score Metroid got. 10! Shocking! I never would have guessed!
6. You know what games I’m interested in this week? Call me teh lamer, but I’m interested in Carnival games for the Wii and the Brunswick bowling game as well..although I’ve heard bad things..I guess we’ll see.
7. Sorry about the link for our league being private. Nothing I can do….

Draft is done

Friday, August 24th, 2007

Thanks to all who participated in the Fantasy team draft tonight. Should be a fun season. You can see our page by clicking here.

NHL 2K8 Conference Call

Friday, August 24th, 2007

I’m going to be taking part in an NHL 2K8 developer call on August 30th. So, if your last question was not answered in the latest Q&A, please submit something again and I’ll submit it. No guarantee that it will get picked, but I’ll ask it.

Thursday weather and notes

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

1. I don’t think I’ve ever seen as much rain as we’re having right now here in Wisconsin. Just about every body of water that I see on the way to work is about well over it’s shores. There is a little ‘waterfall’ (as Gaby calls it) that is right next to her daycare. Usually the drop is about 3 to 4 feet. Today, the drop was around 6 inches. Considering the fact that it’s still raining, I bet by the end of the day it’s just going to look like part of the river. What’s comical about it is that we didn’t have any rain for about a month before the rain started and things were brown and awful looking everywhere. Now we’ve had rain pretty much every day for well over a week… and it’s supposed to keep raining for the next few days, take the weekend off, and start again. It’s just plain nuts.

2. On a lighter note, I was reading Variety today and saw that NBC is bringing back American Gladiators to TV. Great. That’s just the kind of TV that we need.

3. 65 Pro Wrestlers, below the age of 50, have died since 1997. 65!?! To hell with being concerned about steroids in baseball, I think there is somewhere else that George Mitchell should be focusing his attention.

4. Activision is including a Guitar Hero III demo on the newest Tony Hawk game for the 360. I never really thought that the Guitar geek crowd and the Skater game geek crowd were one in the same, but I guess I was wrong.

5. CompUSA is selling Crackdown for 360 for $17.49. Use ONCAMPUS and get free shipping. I know a lot of people bought this game for access to the Halo 3 beta, but it’s actually a very fun sandbox game. It’s well worth that price. (Updated: Sold out online. Bummer)

6. Whatever happened to Dan’s trivia?

There’s funny, then there is Michigan’s Marques Slocom

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

This is simply awesome.

Please, please, please let Todd see this.

PGR 4 Out 10/2

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

Received word from the Gamerscore team that Project Gotham Racing 4 will release October 2nd….just FYI..

Stop using your MS Wireless Wheel!

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

Microsoft has announced there’s a small issue with the Wireless Wheel — specifically when plugged into an outlet, it can overheat. Wow…that sounds like a console, doesn’t it? WTG!

Anyway, you can get a ‘free retrofit’ by clicking here and then drilling down and filling out the form. You need your Xbox serial, the wheel serial, and also you have to pee in a cup. At least MS is taking this seriously — I mean why allow you to email in a form when you can print and mail it in.

Ugh.

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

As the Orioles are about to drop Game 2 — right now it’s a ‘9-7 thriller’….anyway, mad propz to Wes Littleton, who somehow “saved” the game for the Rangers. The score was only 14-3 when he took over, but Glen tells me that if you pitch the last 3 innings regardless, you get the save. Wow. I think they need to change that rule.

It’s just one game but I don’t know if 1988’s 0-21 season was worse than this. Granted in 1988, I was still in high school and didn’t get 23 PM’s 14 XBL messages, and 3 cell phone calls letting me know who won tonight…but damn…..it’s pretty bad.

Bioshock, I was wrong…

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

This game is terrific. I’ve already had 2 or 3 moments where I had the crap scared out of me and I’m only about 2 hours into the game.

I just hope that keeps me this riveted for the long run.

Orioles announce Trembley will in manage 2008, then lose by 27.

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

I can’t frickin believe this. I agree with keeping Trembley as manager, right up until the Orioles game up thirty…THIRTY runs in game 1 of the doubleheader. They lost by 27. That’s 3 touchdowns, 3 PATs, and 2 Field goals. Mark this as the ‘low point’ in Orioles history.

Oh well, nothing like playing a second game and winning 1-0, right? :)
