Thursday news and notes
- Dan is out of town for something involving Blackjack or something. I don’t know all the details. All I know is he’s at a casino and he keeps sending me messages saying, “Shoe money tonight.” (Sports geek points if you nail the reference.)
- My unabashed love for all things MLB Power Pros continues. It’s too damn cool to see a popup on the screen telling you what hits you need to complete a cycle, or telling you that you’re 7 home runs away from 200 on your career. Those touches are just a thing of beauty. Everyone needs this game. Maybe I should start something like that $100 laptop project. EMHMPP.com (Everyone must have MLB Power Pro) We could have people donate money to give all these poor gamers the baseball game that they’ve always wanted. Maybe even a telethon… you know, without Jerry Lewis and gay bashing.
- Okami has been confirmed for the Wii. I never played the game on the PS2, but it was proclaimed to be one of the most visually pleasing games ever made. I’ll definitely give it a look now though. Hopefully the controls work out.
- Brian Lara’s Cricket makes it’s debut on Gametap. I just have to give it a shot tonight. I tried to watch Cricket a few years ago and the game just mystified me. I have absolutely no idea how to play it, so it should be a blast.
- I’m heading to Vegas next week for a conference. I’m planning on doing some sports betting, drinking, oh and attending the conference. Any shows worth seeing? I’m not big on gambling, other than small wagers on sports, so I’m looking for suggestions as to what to do while I’m out there by myself.

“ll I know is he’s at a casino and he keeps sending me messages saying, ‘Shoe money tonight.’ (Sports geek points if you nail the reference.)”
It was Dana’s (Felicty Huffman) favorite catch phrase in the episode of Sports Night where they play poker in the office.

DING! Winner, winner, chicken dinner.
Sports Night is one of my all time favorite shows. I watch the series at least 2 times a year and get pissed at the end of the last episode every time, because the series got canceled just when it was hitting it’s stride.

I’m 5-7 in Season mode using the Padres (I did a Dream Draft) and it’s the most fun sports game I’ve played in a long while. I’m still adjusting to the fielding and baserunning parts of the game, but the hit variety is great and the stadium detailing is just phenomenal. My favorite “minor detail” is when the announcer brings up when your relief pitcher first entered the game.
Being an MVP Baseball fan, I’m hoping when that series is revived it has the same amount of detail that Power Pros currently possesses.

Yeah, Sports Night was a great show. I actually had to buy the DVD set twice because my first one disappeared. No idea what happened to it. I don’t remember loaning it out.
Anyway, the show did sort of peak in the first season (which as phenomenal). I thought the second season (a few gems aside) struggled a bit more and I know at one point I read an interview with Sorkin where he admitted the show got shafted in terms of his writing because he was so focused on The West Wing. Anyway, good stuff all the same. It’s a shame Studio 60 got cancelled. It wasn’t his best work but there should always be one Sorkin-penned show on TV.

I just loved where Sports Night was going right when it ended. “If you can’t make money off of Sports Night, you shouldn’t be in the money making business.” I just love that line.
Yeah, I thought Studio 60 was really getting good at the end of the year as well. In fact, I haven’t watched the last 3 episodes because I didn’t want to watch them and then be upset about the fact that it’s all over and there is no more.
I’m just crazy that way.

The last three episodes were among the best they did. You should watch them if you get a chance. They actually tied it off very well and the final shot is just magnificent (once I had the legend about leaving a light on “for the ghost” explained to me).

Oh, I’m definitely going to watch them.. I’ve just been delaying it for my own silly reasons.
Of course the DVD set came out this week, so I’ll just end up buying that. Won’t be in HD, but it’s the best I can do.
