Audio Expert Needed

I just got that PS3 for my home theater.  I’m having some issues I hope an audiophile can help me out with. On the BD I have two options: PCM Linear or Bitstream. I always thought bitstream was better but when I select it it says that I may not get all the audio during playback.

On my receiver which is a Panasonic SA 100 (it doesn’t have TrueHD audio, just 6.1 dolby), when I have Spider Man playing back on PCM Linear it’s saying it’s only getting a 2 channel input (just showing L and R speakers). When I hit display on my PS3, it says it’s playing in TrueHD Dolby. Now if I switch to bitstream, my receiver shows 5.1 audio, but it sounds like it’s just 2.0 audio — nothing comes out of the surround speakers. I’m stumped. Please don’t tell me I have to buy a new receiver too. I don’t have this problem with HDDVD!!!

Thanks for any help you can provide.

How is the PS3 hooked up to the receiver and how was your HD-DVD player hooked up to the receiver?

Both players are connected to my audio receiver via TOSLINK (ie optical). Both are connected via a monoprice HDMI switch to my Samsung TV.

Ah, there’s your problem. DolbyTruHD can only send 2 channels over Toslink. PCM is only 2 channels to begin with, which is why your receiver says it’s only getting 2 channels. Dolby TruHD can send all channels, but only through an HDMI 1.3 connection. If it goes over Toslink, it can only send over 2 channels. I’m wondering if when it sends the signal, it tells the receiver that it can send over 5 channels, but there’s only enough bandwidth for 2. Not sure. I’m also not sure why you don’t have this problem with your HD-DVD player. Does the HD-DVD player support Dolby TruHD?

Fucking Blu ray. This fucking sucks. So I have to get a new receiver. So anyone who buys a fucking player has to have a reciever with an HDMI in that processes audio?

Yes, I’m a bitter guy right now.
