Metal Gear Solid and Game Informer

The latest Game Informer has an interesting article where they debunk great video game myths -- like GoldenEye being the greatest game ever, Rez being good, and so forth. It's quite interesting -- but I'm not sure if the whole point of the article was just to take an opposing viewpoint or if that's what they really believe.

Anyway, I want to throw my two cents in regarding Metal Gear Solid 4. Most every site and every review has given this game a 10 score. I find it incredibly boring and dumb. Whether it be the far too drawn out cutscenes, the "stealth" stuff that is done much better by any Tom Clancy game or the PC Thief series, or the terrible animations when all of a sudden Snake can't seem to shoot a gun but he does keep reaching for his weapon over and over, I'm not having a whole lot of fun with the game at all.

I'm bored. What am I missing here? Please help me out...

  1. Yeah, the Game Informer article is supposed to just take the opposite side and point out a great game’s flaws. This is the second time they do one of those.

As for MGS4, I just finished it yesterday. Overall I enjoyed it, but like GTA IV, I cannot understand how it has been getting such outstanding reviews. This game is not a 10, much like GTA IV isn’t.

50% of the game consists of cut-scenes, which even though they are extremely well directed and look fantastic, are way too drawn out and trying too hard to be “stylish” and they just slows everything down.

The final Act has a bunch of pretty silly, cheesy, and melodramatic moments too. Some great ones as well, but they get overwhelemed by the other stuff.

But, the beginning of Act 4 is still one of my favorite gaming moments in a while.

Overall, the game was solid (pun intended) but not deserving of 10 (or maybe even a 9), IMO.
