Monday night notes

- So, I've been thinking about putting together a better PC in order to play through some of the games that I've picked up over the past few years.  It was just tonight that I noticed that my gaming PC is over 5 years old.

I've been looking over Tom's Hardware and their guides for putting together reasonably priced PC's and was curious for input about what people would recommend for a quality gaming system?  I don't want to break the bank, but I'd like to have something decent again.  Any video card and processor thoughts?

- Thanks to Netflix on the 360, I've been watching through quite a few episodes of 30 Rock of late.  Why didn't anyone bother to tell me how entertaining this show is.  I haven't laughed this much at a sitcom in a long, long time.

- So, the Packers hire Dom Capers to run the defense.  Meh.  Better than Haslett at least.

  1. Video card: I like the HD 4870 best, although the GTX 260 is a reasonable option. Anything more powerful is overkill for someone who wants “reasonably priced”. The 9800GTX and HD 4850 are both quite acceptable as well.

CPU: For best price/performance on the cheap side, overclock a lower-end C2D (E5200, E7400). For best price/performance at the higher end, get a Phenom II quad core.

  2. Yeah, I really don’t feel the need for a Quad core as most software still can’t use it. I’m really going to have to put some time into this to see what I really want to do… and then I have to figure out if I want to get a new monitor. The 20″ Dell that I have should be fine though.

  3. Dual monitors for sure! Keep the 20″ Dell you have and look at picking up a 2nd one. While it will not help you with your gaming, you’d be surprised how much more productive you can be with other things…or you can use it to watch netflix/hulu/MediaCenter/whatever while doing other things on the PC.

  4. I have dual monitors at work, but I just don’t think I have the desk space at home for it.

Also, my computer will be ‘sharing’ the desk with the PC that my daughter uses. The last thing I need is her playing Freddy Fish on 46 inches of monitor.
