Friday Morning Gaming Roundup

  • First off, NHL Arcade 3-on-3 is very fun. I don't know why 360 owners got the shaft this week but it's okay, you'll get it next week. Again, if you like hockey with "goalie shrink" power ups and "Super Goalie" power ups, you'll enjoy this. The power ups aren't horribly stupid and actually make the game fun. For $10, it's very enjoyable.
  • The demo for MLB 09 gives you 3 innings between the Phillies and Rays. Apparently Citizens Bank thought it would be a great way to offset some of their banking f ups, because their logo is accurately detailed throughout the park -- it does make the experience much more realistic.
  • The demo itself isn't horribly different from last year as far as the basic gameplay mechanics go -- they've added many bells and whistles including a quick menu and better swing/pitch tracking which is a very nice feature.
  • One thing noticed off the bat (heh). The announcers call attention to the umpires and call them by name -- so if it's a bad call you'll get a comment like "(name of ump) is usually one of the better ones, but that call was marginal" or something like that-- I am paraphrasing here. I thought it was a very nice touch.
  • I ran out of time and wasn't able to play the new golf course or the new bowlers or the new burnout multiplayer add on.
  • What a great night of gaming on the PS3 though!!
  • A follow up on the Amazon Deal from a few days ago: Guinness Book of World Records for Wii is surprisingly fun and requires some pretty good athleticism. I was exhausted after playing the "eat 10 cockroaches in the fastest time" mini game.
  • Finally, today's Amazon Deal is NFS Undercover for $40

Attention sports gamers: this is the greatest day in the history of PS3 PS Store updates.

What’s up this week: How about NHL Arcade 3-on-3 or, maybe a new Hot Shots Golf Course…or perhaps the MLB 09 The Show Demo?

I am spending a crap load on the PS Store today….

Wednesday News and Notes

Where was the NHL 3 on 3 game that EA was supposed to release for Live Arcade today?

Rumor has it the game will show up on PSN tomorrow, which seems a little, uh, interesting. The R-Type game is pretty fun though…

You may have missed it but the PS3 blog has some more MLB The Show Updates…looks like this game got bumped to March…I’m okay with it.

You know what I”m not okay with ? Kiefer Sutherland doing voiceovers for the scum that is Bank of America. Ugh.

Speaking of 24, that show has been pretty good this year. Although I still love how he can say he’s in the southwest corner of the basement and everyone knows right where that is…..

Monday notes

- Gamestop and a few other sites have posted teaser trailers to MLB2K9.  It looks pretty impressive, but I would love to see the day where the ball comes straight out of a pitchers hand, instead of coming out of their hand... then shifting over 2 or 3 inches.  It's just takes you out of what could be a much more realistic looking trailer.

- I'll post some impressions of MLB Front Office Manager later tonight.  I've liked a bit of what I've seen and have been distressed about some other things.  One thing I will say though is that a patch could go a long way to making it a very, very good simulation game.

- On EA's blog, they have posted about an interesting new feature in Madden NFL 10, procedural awareness.  What that is supposed to mean is that a player can only react to the things that they see.  It'll be interesting to see how they can actually make that work.  Maybe they'll bring back the concept of the 'view cone' and add this...

- Back to work...

Superbowl

I'll second what Dan said... the refs were waaaay too involved in that game.  The roughing-the-qb penalty against the Cards was an f'n joke.

Still, an incredibly enjoyable 4th quarter of football.

The only shame of it was the fact that a guy fell down on Holmes huge gainer on the last drive.

Oh, and I lost a ton of respect for James Harrison when he punched that guy in the back on that one punt.  Total punk move there for the defensive player of the year.

Last thing, Springsteen's show at Halftime was great.  I'm not a massive fan of his, but it was a great set.

Super Bowl

How exactly was that last fumble not reviewed? WTF? Oh well, congrats to the Steelers. Pretty exciting game….refs were terrible though…

I was kinda hoping the NFC would win, since that usually means a good stock market…..dammit.
