- More later.

I hadn’t been to Target in a while, and just out of curiosity I visited the videogame section. The video game section was getting smaller…less games, more “guitar hero” boxes that were unsold and tons of Wiis.

I am beginning to wonder if we’re in for a 1983 redux all over again….

Late Wednesday night notes

- I’m a real sucker for game “deals” and I picked up Street Fighter 4 for the PS3, (God knows why… although my thumb is already killing me) Wario Land: Shake it, and Excitebots all for $20 each.  Good prices for Nintendo first party games and as for Street Fighter… I just like getting my ass kicked online apparently.

- I just wrapped up my first season of Road to Glory and I just can’t help but to like the mode.. but I’m mystified by the AI used by my team.  We’ll be up by 14 late in the 4th and keep running play action.  It just kills me… but I guess that’s the way it goes in a mode like this.

Tomorrow night I’ll start out in my Dynasty mode with the Badgers.

- Nice to see the Brewers pull out a late win.  Seeing McGahee hit a homer after his son threw out the first pitch tonight was a great thing.

- So, I’m going to give NCAA Football 10 another go.  I need to put in some more time before I really make a final opinion on the game.   I’ll try to get some more time in on it before our next podcast.

- Speaking of that podcast… Dan has one of the best poker faces around… you’ll never know what he’s talking about.  He’s just so subtle.

- Quite the week thus far.  I got home last night around midnight and had to take the girls to Urgent Care tonight when the two year old wouldn’t stop crying and screaming complaining about stomach pain.  Fun, fun, fun.

- Allow me to go a bit Peter King on you all… Sierra Nevada’s Torpedo Extra IPA… quite tasty.  Very hoppy and fruity.  A nice way to end a tough evening.

- Good lord… the Brewers really know when to hit the crapper.  Losing the last three games (two of which to the Nationals) and giving up 32 runs in those three games.  Oh, yeah… trading for one pitcher will fix these problems.

Please… stay pat… or trade Hart or Hardy for future prospects and work for next year.  This team isn’t ready for a playoff run this year… but could be next year if they can make the right moves.

- What’s the over/under on number of days before Favre suggests he’s unsure about retiring?

I may or may not have gotten into the Xbox Live Preview program. I mean hypothetically if I already got an email, I would hypothetically be turning my 360 on and off hoping the update will get here soon.

Following in the footsteps of EA, 2K Sports announced today they will make a downloadable prequel to NBA 2K10 called NBA 2K10: Draft Combine. Very interesting…it’s only going to be $5, so that’s nice

We have a great guest set up for our Friday podcast. Not sure if it will be me or Glen both doing it, time permitting, but this is going to be a good one. On a completely unrelated note, I wonder if any football games are coming out in August.

Finally, check out this video and contest: http://www.manapotions.com/contest.html

Ok, I’ve been given 2 codes for the Madden 10 demo.

One for the PS3 and one for the 360.

First person to respond gets the code of their choice.  (The other code goes to me… unless I can find some more.)

Good luck!

Update:  Wow.  That didn’t take long.  PS3 code has been given away.  I’ll try to get more this week if possible.

Wii Sports Resort

I picked up Wii Sports Resort and played a few games with my son.

My thoughts:

Table Tennis – fun. Not a whole lot different than other games. but decent enough.

Bowling – Much harder than the original.

Frisbee – I found it very difficult. My son found it very easy.

Fencing – A lot like Wii Boxing..flail away.

Wakeboarding – ho hum.

Basketball (3 pt shootout) – Fun, challenging

AirSports – Never thought of dogfighting as a sport, but it’s cute

This game has “stamps” which is the Wii version of achievements. Also as you finish one game you unlock others like a 100pin bowling game (vs 10 pins).

All cute stuff, enjoyable. It’s like a casual game – something to do and fun, but not anything you’ll write home about.

I’m headed out to get WiiSports Resort right now…sorry about the podcast. I was ready to go but it didn’t work.

Of course, it’s funny that the IT guy can’t figure it out, but whatever. He also sucks at the Bigs 2 for that matter.

In other news, I’ve been playing NCAA and the Bigs 2all weekend…in NCAA, I’ve been looking for the “peephole on Erin Andrews mode” that everyone’s been talking about but no such luck.

Anyway, Road To Glory has been keeping me busy. I started as a QB from my HS, lost in the final game (boo!) but got many offers. I went as a 3rd String QB to OSU.

The ‘practice’ mode seems rather silly; in order to move up to 2nd string you need 105 practice points. Points are given out when you get a pass for good yardage or get a TD on a pass. If you start at the 40 yd line, and throw a 35 yd pass, that’s 2 points. If you through it for 40 and it’s a TD, you can get 6. Yeah, that’s fair.

So basically you have to do this drill twice and then voila you’re first string. I became first string at OSU in October of my Freshman year. Just like how it is for real. I guess there’s a trade off between 2 yrs of practice and being a boring game or being unrealistic but able to play.

Games go faster in this mode because you don’t have to play through everything. I have to say, overall, I don’t hate the game as much as I thought – how’s that for a ringing endorsement. Madden is much better though, just in the demo.

Dan and I were all set to record a podcast tonight and my recording software won’t stop crashing Skype.  Grrrrr.

Well, I have a support call into the company… with some luck we’ll get the show recorded this weekend still.

Friday notes

- I’m efforting a Madden 10 code to see if I can get the full demo.  As you guys have said, a demo with 1 minute quarters is not a great way to view how a game plays out.

- I started playing The Bigs 2 on Wednesday night and found that the game is a good deal more challenging than the last version.  Dan’s reasoning for my issues with the games was summed up with a simple, “You suck.”

From what I’ve seen thus far, it seems like there are certain games that have some catch up logic, but it might just be as Dan says… and that I need to put more time in.

I will say that I was getting a good deal more frustrated with the game than I would have liked though.  I’ll try to give it a bit more time tonight.

- As loyal blog readers would know, I wasn’t a great fan of the former president, but I just read a very interesting article on Time about the request for Scooter Libby’s pardon and found it to be a great read.  It doesn’t really change my views on George W. Bush, but it’s a fascinating look into the pardon process that Bush went with and the lengths that Cheney went to to attempt to secure the pardon for Libby.

- I think I’m going to try and see Harry Potter 6 today.  I only have to work half days at work on Friday… so it seems like a good thing to do before I have to pick up the kids from daycare.

- More later

Madden 10 – Whoa

As a GameStop preorder-er I was able to download the Madden Demo with 5 minute quarters.

Folks, if this demo turns out to be anything like the final product, we are all in for a treat.

The intros and cinematics are amazing; the graphics phonomenal; the gameplay is great as well.

Remember in an interview how the Madden team said that you weren’t going to drop back all day and that it would be more like real football? It is. It is amazingly fast. You still have time to make your passes, but you are not going to sit around for long.

I love how the referees confer about TDs and so forth. I did lose my game 20-14, but I was impressed. And best of all, no annoying play by play!

Thanks to Dominic at Cynamite for sending us the information that they have posted some screenshots containing some of the player ratings and photos for NHL10.

I’m just bummed that I can’t see how good EA thinks Tavarez will be for the Islanders… but it’s probably going to be a rough season for them anyway….  Regardless, I’ll probably be ordering the NHL Center Ice package this year… because I’m just that sad…
