The Blog for the Sports Gamer Three guys who love Sports Gaming rant and rave about various stuff.

Quick Friday notes

- So, the newest MLB10 trailer is out... and it looks to show that the line between real life and what the game can represent is blurring.  I'll leave it up to you to see what you think.

- I think I've settled on PYS6 and the God of War collection as my next games to tackle.  Plenty of good gaming available there.

- Don't want to jinx it, but Dan and I are shooting to do a podcast tonight.   I have to pick up my kids from daycare... so there is no chance of me working late tonight.  Thank goodness.

- Anyone played the recent Total War entries?  Steam has a deal to buy the last 3 for $20 right now.  Empire sounded really intriguing, but I could probably just settle on Rome for $3.    Thoughts?

- One last question to you all, Texas to the Big Ten?  As a Big Ten guy, I don't think this makes a ton of sense (well, it certainly does financially,) but not in a geographic sense.   It doesn't create any natural rivalries and breaks up some pretty huge ones between the Longhorns and Oklahoma and A&M.   The money would really drive it, if it were to happen... which.. I don't believe it will.

  1. That Total War deal on Steam is amazing. I have been playing them since the first Medieval TW and love them all. They are a bit historically inaccurate (for gameplays sake) in vanilla form but the mods at TWCenter take care of that. I just reinstalled Rome Gold because I saw the sale and got nostalgic. M:TW 2 was great too. I have ben playing Empire TW with some of the DLC for almost a year now. The thing about these games is their replayability. It is endless.
Napoleonic TW is preordered and I am eagerly awaiting it, bugs and all.
Although they are a worse timesink then WoW. Okay maybe not but you get the idea.
I cannot recommend them highly enough.

  2. If you haven’t already, you should read this blog by a lawyer who did an amazing job analyzing the potential candidates for the Big Ten. He explains in pretty great detail, especially in the follup updates, why Texas to the Big Ten is a good match for both from an Academic, Financial, and Athletic perspective:

He certainly sold me on it. The biggest thing to remember, and the blog points it out, is that the Big 12 pulls in very little money and is just waiting to crumble. If Texas doesn’t join the Big Ten, and someone like Missouri does, then the Big 12 still collapses and Texas could get left w/o a chair. They then have to hope they can get into the Pac-10, which they were denied by Stanford in the last go around 15 years ago.

I think as sports fans we have a very skewed perspective on what conferences should be and what they should represent. At the end of the day the conferences are intended to increase revenue for their member institutions.
