NFL overtime rule changes

I know that some of you aren't big podcast fans, but I covered my feelings on this in my daily show over at www.sgmore.com.

I personally believe this is one of the more idiotic rule changes that the league has ever forced upon it's coaches and players.   That's my brief analysis of the rule change.  More in depth thoughts are available in the podcast.

Ugh.  I don't want to get started about it again.

What are your thoughts on the change?

  1. What’s idiotic about it? It’s a slight improvement over what was there before.

    Some other ideas I heard:
-Keep the OT rules the same as they were, but move the kickoff up so that a touchback is more likely. I guess the good thing there is that if the other team is starting at the 20, then the defense has ample opportunity to get the ball back.
-Instead of sudden death, just set it to an 8 minute period. I wouldn’t have a huge problem with that, but part of the complaints against making any changes to the rules in the first place was that you’re adding wear and tear to the players.

I think the change they made was the smallest change they could make, and that’s why I’m ok with it.

  2. I think it could have been done so much more simply to have moved the kickoffs back.

This way creates so many situational things about what constitutes a possession and such.

I liked simple, and that’s what it was before. It may not have been 50/50 fair, but it was simple.

  3. I was vaguely aware of the complexity involved in possessions and “opportunities of possession” in the jsonline article that you linked to from http://www.sportsgamesandmore.com/, but the article showed me it’s a bit more complex than I realized. We could be in for some long ref explanations over the loudspeaker followed by much of the stadium booing or cheering loudly.

I probably would have been ok with moving the kickoff up to ensure a touchback and a longer field for the offense at the beginning of OT. But I don’t think anything short of the college OT (which I wouldn’t be a fan of for the NFL) will result in 50/50 win/loss results for NFL overtimes. So it was a tricky thing to change but I’m glad they at least tried SOMETHING.
