Wednesday morning notes
- I'm curious as to what some of you think about the leaked MLB financial docs that have appeared over on Deadspin.
There is no appearance of anything "wrong" with what is being done, but the concept of amortizing salaries seems just a bit shady, even if it is an ok practice. I mean, is every player losing value, like a printer or a computer?
Hopefully some of you are more well versed in accounting practices than people like me are.
- For no good reason, here's an old You Tube chestnut with Bert and Ernie rapping.
- Anyone try out NHL2K11 on the iPhone or iPod touch?
I've been doing my best to try out sports games on the iPhone when they come out, but I just have such a hard time with the controls. Certain games seem to work so well, but the virtual joysticks that they use just seem so wonky to me.
Thoughts?
- As a football fan, I was bummed to see Sidney Rice go down for at least 8 weeks with his hip surgery. As a Packer fan, it was nice to see the Vikings have one less weapon on offense.
I do have to say that the signing of Javon Walker is an odd one. He was completely out of football last year due to a surgery... that he couldn't even have done in the United States or Canada (that links him to Dr. Galea, who sent him to Jerusalem to have the procedure done.) Javon does have a history of big games with Brett (the game after Favre's father passed away, being the biggest one,) so there is some connection between the two there.
Still, the Vikings are in a tough place as far as their receiving core goes.
- Reports today have the DJ Hero bundle for $19.99 at Toys R Us for the next two days.
Personally, I loved the game and got well more than 20 dollars worth of gameplay out of it. Opinions may vary there, but I thought it was well worth that kind of price.

Two days until the draft.

Player amortisation is common in other sports. In soccer, the accounting treatment reflects the fact that if a player is at the end of his contract, he effectively has zero value as he will be able to leave on a free transfer at the end of his current deal, rather than his current club being able to sell him. It also matches the fact that the club effectively has to pay the player over the term of his contract, so has a long-term liability which diminishes month by month.
Stop yawning at the back !!

Hey, if they’re yawning, it’s because I wanted ‘accounting talk’ at the blog today.
I guess I’ve wondered how that would apply in a baseball sense, as players in their first 5 years continue to “appreciate” in their value to the team, as they (almost always) have to pay them more each of the first 5 years of their major league status.
After that, I can see what you are talking about though.

Our full review of NHL 2k11 for the iPhone is up. In short – it is a fantastic mobile game.

Thanks for the review link.
I gave the Lite version a look last night and was a bit underwhelmed with the controls. I’ll give it a bit more time to see how much more I like it with time.

Glen,
Out of curiosity, do you typically like iPhone controls? They are certainly hard to get used to if coming from a gamepad. As far as compared to other sports games/twitch games on the iPhone, I found them to be pretty decent. Especially compared to games like Madden on the iPhone, the controls feel much more responsive in my opinion.

Typically, no… I haven’t been able to get used to the virtual joystick in most of the iPhone games. But since most of the ones that I’ve tried have been freebies, I’ve just given it a look for a few minutes, then moved onto something else. I’ve got to give it more of a try to see if I can adapt to it eventually.
What I have found so far with the demo is that my thumb tends to slide up the screen and my player just stands there because I’m not on the control ‘sweetspot’ any more. Not having any indication that I’ve lost control of them is an issue for me. Something indicating that a player isn’t moving anymore probably would be helpful for me, but that might just be me. heh.
