Craig actually posts

I know I have not posted in a while.  I just really haven't had much to say, so here is a recap of the past few weeks.

  • Gaming - I signed up for the Xbox Live Family pack and let my son take the main account that we've had since day one since he has a ton of downloaded add-ons.  I only had 1 (Texas Holdem that I got when it was free).  So my new gamertag is crgandjul while he keeps crgnjul.  So if you have my in your friends list, you should update it.   My brother-in-law and Nephew have the other 2 accounts.  So splitting the cost we now have 2 accounts for less then the price of one and they they same.  I did loose my Madden and MLB2K10 franchises.  I've decided not to start either of them over for now, but have been thinking about getting NCAA Football.  Thoughts?
  • Old School Gaming - I recently reinstalled Lucas Arts' Outlaws and Dark Forces.  Neither were easy to get running on Windows 7, but I finally got them going.  I've played Outlaws far more than DF and am about 1/2 way thru it.  I'm stuck on one of the puzzle missings (where you have to open all the water pipes).  I've got all but 1 pipe running but can't remember how to get that last one.  I've only played the first mission in DF, but will be working on it when I either finish Outlaws or get stuck on Outlaws and need a break.  I really wish someone would release a sequal to Outlaws.  That's always been a favorite game of mine.
  • Tablets - About 9 months ago I bought an Asus T91-MT which is a 9" netbook whos screen will turn around and fold flat on the keyboard and is Multi-Touch.  It runs Windows 7 and I've upgraded it to 2Gigs of RAM.  It has a 1 Gig Atom CPU and a 32Gig SSD.  No fans, so it's silent.  I like the unit, but after playing with an iPad and more recently a Samsung Galaxy Tab I think I'm going to put it on eBay and get a slate.  I don't know which one.  I'm leaning towards Android since I think the iPads are over priced.  Rooting a Nook Color seems to be the way to go, but it is missing a camera, microphone and bluetooth.  Of course it also has the best screen out there and is only $250.  The Galaxy Tab seems nice, but it's slower than a rooted Nook Color and 2.5 times more expensive.  It does have the camera, mic and bluetooth however.  Do I need those features?  Probably not, but it would be nice to run Skype or a softphone on it when traveling.

Music

How often do you discover artists from non traditional sources?  I guess before you can answer that a definition of a traditional source would need to be given.  So for this quick question lets say traditional sources are radio, MTV type channels, clubs and "suggestion" links when listening to music online.

As a followup, let's make this post a non traditional source and let's hear some recommendations from you on artists you enjoy that most people wouldn't know about.

I'll start of course.  I know a lot of people my age listened to Depeche Mode back in the 80's.  I however never did.  I'm not sure why, but it's probably due to all the Metal I was listening to.  Anyway about 5 years ago I was reading on a Photography forum I was active on and one guy had a quote from "Blasphemous Rumours" as his signature.  I looked it up, listened and ended up grabbing a bunch of their songs.  Man I missed the boat on that one.

I've also picked up a few songs from video game soundtracks (not GH and RB), background music in TV shows and movies.  But I've also grabbed a few that I first heard in commercials.  The one that sticks out most in my mind is "Half Acre" by HEM in a Liberty Mutual commercial.

As for artist that most people haven't heard of that I recommend; There are a bunch, but here would be my current top 2.

  1. Poe- While she had a couple minor hits with Hello and Angry Johnny back in 85/86 if you've heard them you may not know they were the same artist.  Additionally that whole CD and followup "Haunted" are my 2 favorite CDs of all time.  If I could only pick 1 CD to listen to for the rest of my life it would be one of these 2.
  2. The Swear - This is a local Atlanta band.  Definitely some anger in these songs.  1 EP and 1 CD released.  I've never heard them on the radio, but found them when looking for a concert to go to one weekend.  Speaking of, they are playing at Vinyl in Atlanta this Friday night.  If anyone would like to meet up at the show let me know.  I'm debating going to see them or Slippery When Wet at Wild Bills.

Your turn.

Odds & Ends

Having been a while since my last post I've got a few topics to talk about

- Madden: Another new patch was installed on my 360 the other day.  I'm not sure exactly when it came out since I don't play it every day nor have I seen what the update does.  I'm sure Steve and the guys over at OS could tell me if I looked.  I'm still seeing kickoffs caught at about the 5 with 20 yard returns so teams are starting from around the 25.

So I'm playing a franchise game last night.  I'm up by 14-7 with 3 minutes to go against the Chargers.  They drive to score and tie it up.  I score in 3 or 4 plays to go up 21-7 with 1:30 or so left.  The Chargers score on 2 plays to tie it at 21 with 56 seconds left.  I moved the ball a little and line up for a 54 yard field goal with 2 seconds left.  I hit the buttons so that power is at 98% and 100% accurate.  The ball hits the cross bar and falls short.  Off to OT.  Collinsworth tells me the new OT rules as I win the coin toss and of course take the ball.  I picked GameFlow for the kickoff as always and it's kicked to my rookie returner.  I run up the left hash and see that I have 2 blockers left and the 2 end gunners there are starting to come in and should be blocked.  I cut left as my blockers engage and run right by them.  Nobody between me and the end zone.  And yes, I actually scored.  I returned a kick for a TD in Madden 11.  That's only my 2nd return past the 30 yard line!

- Tablets/Slates: I don't know about the rest of you, but the more I play with an iPad, the more I like it.  I don't like the fact that Apple can reject apps so you have to jailbreak it to get some apps Apple doesn't like, but I like the device itself.  It's the right size, the right weight and well as people always say with Apple products "it just works".  I purchased a true tablet (Asus T91MT) about 9 months ago.  It's a netbook where the screen can turn around and lay flat over the keyboard.  It's touch screen with onscreen keyboard when needed.  I like it too.  I like that it runs Windows 7 so I can install any apps I want.  I like that it has a real keyboard.  I just think I'd use an iPad more.  The weight on the Asus is a bit heavy to be ultra portable and since it's a 10" screen, the keyboard is a bit tight to do any real work on it.  So why haven't I bought an iPad?  I just can't justify the cost.  I guess I like the iPad, but just not at it's current price points.

I mention all this to ask a question:  Is anyone using an Android tablet?  I'm really thinking that might be the way to go.  There are tons of price points for them and a lot of them already have front facing cameras to use in Skype.  I do think I want a capacitive screen.  I'd love to hear feedback from anyone using one.

- Work: As you may remember I work in the IT field.  The past 3 years or so we've been in mostly a break / fix mode.  No big upgrades, no new projects, no network overhauls.  Well that changed about 2 months ago.  We are staring to spend money and do the projects that have been on the back burner.  We are looking at doing several upgrades and implementing several new technologies.

VMWare View is the first one.  For those unfamiliar with it; A high level overview is that users have a thin client that connects to a virtual desktop hosted in a data center.  There are some setup headaches with this and users have to get use to using it, but the benefits are fantastic.  No more updating a piece of software on 300 machines manually - you update your golden image and then all users are updated.  No more worries about users getting a laptop stolen with data on it.  All the data is still in the data center.  No need to upgrade users hardware every 3-4 years all they need is that same thin client (which could be a real PC or a true thin client).

We are in the early stages of rolling View out.  We have 10 users on it all day.  Users on the same LAN as the data center don't see a speed difference at all.  Users over a fast WAN connection (20MB) see a slight difference, a little faster for somethings and touch slower for others, but overall they say they like it and want to keep it.  Users over a slow WAN (2MB or even VPN over DSL) LOVE IT.  Those users would upload files from their laptops to the server which would take 5-10 minutes depending on the size of the file.  Now on their Virtual desktop that same upload takes under 10 seconds since the file is going from one server to another in the same data center.  I would be shot if I told them that we decided not to buy this technology and they had to go back to using their laptops.

-That's all for now.  Time to play some more Diablo 2 LOD.

Craig actually talks games

- Madden 11 (360):  I've all but abandoned this game.  I want to like it so much, but I'm just not enjoying it.  I did finally make it through my first season and had a decent draft. I'm sure I'll play a game here and there, but it's not like I was with Madden 10 where I played a game every day after work.

- NBA Jam (Wii):  Ok, this game is just awesome.  It's as good as the arcade, but with many more modes and you have to love the controls.  My son is more of a FPS gamer, but this is one sports game he'll play with me.  If you have a Wii, you should have this game.

- NHL Slapshot (Wii): After hearing Dan going gaga over this game I decided to check it out.  I rented it, so I didn't get the little hockey stick thing.  I don't think that matters however.  This game is fun.  I've only played 3 or so games so far, but I like the controls and the feel of the game.  It's not a sim by any means, but it plays a fun game.

- Diablo 2 LOD (PC): Yep I'm playing this one again.  My son and I are ready to fight Diablo.  The game is definitely repetitive after all these years, but we still enjoy it.

WTF

I saw the Randy Moss trade rumors last night, but didn't think it would really happen.  I get up this morning and see that Randy Moss has been traded to the Vikings for a 3rd round pick.  A 3rd round pick?  Wait a minute - they mean a 2nd and a 3rd right?  A 3rd and a 4th?  Just a 3rd?  You've got to be kidding me.  I know Moss is at the end of his career, but he is still one of the best receivers in the game.  He's still got 3 or so great years ahead of him.

This trade makes perfect sense for the Vikings, but I just don't see it from the Patriots side.  I guess we can conclude that the Pats knew they weren't going to resign him for the $$ he wants after the season, so they decided to get something for him rather than let him walk.  I get that, but this trade now sends the message that this is a rebuilding year.  I understand he had zero catches on Monday night, but how many times did he draw double coverage and therefor let Welker or Tate have single coverage against a nickle corner?  That's an important job too.

I'm a big Welker fan, but he's not a #1 WR.  He's now the best WR on the roster, but he's not the deep threat that Moss is.  He's not going to draw double or triple coverage like Moss did.  He still needs to line up in the slot to be at his best.  Is Tate really going to be that deep threat?  Having watched him at UNC, I think he has the skills to be an above average WR in the NFL, but he's no where near a #1 at this time.

I'd love to see the Patriots line for winning the Super Bowl yesterday before this trade vs. today.  Their chances of winning it all, or winning the AFC East, just dropped dramatically.

Games

I figured I'd post an update to the games I'm currently playing.

  • MLB2K10 - I still love this game, but I have gotten to the point where winning is no longer enough to keep me interested.  I'm now focused on my stats more than ever.  I'm in July of season 6, batting .511 with 37 HRs.  My goal is to keep my average above .500 for the year.  I'm not sure I can do it as I was at .550 just 10 games ago and hit a bit of a slump.
  • Madden 11 - I've played a couple games with the newest patch.  I now see kick returns ending between the 25 and 35.  I think blocking has been improved a little bit, but in my 2 games I think I noticed the kickoffs are not going as deep as they were before.  I was only able to get 1 kickoff into the end zone and had no touch backs by any team.  Injuries are still too high.
  • Diablo 2 LOD - My son and I were talking about Diablo 3 last night and how I read late 2011 as a release date and we decided to install Diablo 2 LOD and play that again.  I put in what I thought was 30 minutes last night only to find out it was 3 hours.  I did make sure I didn't complete any quests so that my son and I can complete them together.  I can see me getting addicted to this one again.

TV

So the new fall season is here.  I've done some TV watching this week, but still have some shows to catch up on.  Here are some quick thoughts

  • The Event - Watched about 30 minutes and both the wife and I decided to turn it off.  Unless I hear fantastic things about this one I don't think I'll even finish the first episode
  • How I met your mother - Not the best episode, but still love the show
  • Two and a Half Men - Loved the episode, love the show
  • Mike & Molly - I didn't have high hopes for this one, but I was surprised.  It was funny and entertaining.  I'll be keeping this in the rotation for now
  • Hawaii Five-0 - I enjoyed the first episode, but I'm not totally sold on it yet.  I'll have to watch a few more episodes to see if I'll be watching it long term.  Grace Park in the bikini certainly does help.
  • NCIS - Probably my favorite show.  Good episode this week.  Needless to say this has the highest priority on the Media Center
  • NCIS LA - I haven't watched this weeks show yet.  My wife and I watch this one together and she goes to be early since she gets up so early so we haven't had time yet.  It will get watched this weekend.  This has been a great show and I expect that to continue.
  • Big Bang Theory - One of my favorite comedies.  Right there with Two and a half Men.  No let down with the first episode.
  • Bleep my dad says - Show sucked.  Not even close to being funny.  It got removed from the recording schedule.
  • CSI - Still a good show.  It's taken a step back over the past couple years, but I'm still recording it.  I watch it whenever I have time, but don't feel the need to watch it as soon as I can.
  • The Mentalist - I really like this show.  I love Jane's smugness.  I know others dislike the show for the same reason, but they don't have to tune in.  I'll be watching it all season.
  • CSI Miami - This one has not started yet, but its one I do watch.
  • Covert Affairs - This was a summer series on USA Network that I really liked.  I think it could hang as a prime time show.
  • rizzoli & isles - A summer series on TNT that I enjoyed.  Again I think it could hang as a prime time show.
  • Dark Blue - Another summer series show on TNT.  It's ok.  I watch it since there is nothing else on, but I don't think it would do well competing with other prime time shows.

What do you guys think of this years TV lineup?  What shows am I missing? I know everyone is going to say The Office, but I just never got into that one.  What about other new shows this fall?  Blue Blood? Undercovers?

Clemson

How many of you watched that great Clemson /Auburn game last night?  Yes, my Tigers lost, but it was still a great game.  After 2 powder puff games to start the season I didn't know what kind of team we really had this year.  Now I think I have an idea.  There are definitely still areas to improve on, but I was very happy to see a running game last night.  I was one of those fans that thought the running game was gone with CJ Spiller no longer there.  If last night was any indication it looks like those concerns were unfounded.  While Kyle Parker looked good throwing the ball (at least until his injury) we still need a WR or 2 to step up.  Without a receiving threat teams will load up against the run.

As for gaming news, I'm still playing MLB2K10 more than anything.  I did play another game of Madden, but as much as I want to get into it I'm still having a tough time.  Is anyone else seeing a ton of injuries?  In my most recent game I had 11 or 12 injuries.  Most only had the player off the field for a series.  I didn't realize how many injuries I was seeing until my son was watching and pointed out that there were injuries on 6 consecutive plays.

Now this is how TV should be

Ever since getting my first DVR, a ReplayTV, I was hooked.  It wasn't perfect, but it was a huge improvement over regular TV.  10+ years later and I finally have a DVR that does exactly what I want.  It definitely isn't cheap, but I'd do it all over again.

My setup: PC running Windows 7 (AMD 6000+ CPU, 4GB RAM, 400GB HD for the OS and software installs, 3.5TB of drive space for recorded TV, Centon's InfiniTV 4 with cable card), Four Xbox 360s used as Media Center Extenders, wired ethernet network.

I can now record 4 shows in HD (or SD if needed) at a time as well as watch 5 shows at the same time on any TV in the house.  No more worries about which DVR a show is recorded on, no worries about recording shows in HD on a DVR connected to a SD TV, no definitely no worries about filling up the HD.

Craig’s random bits

1. Madden
     A. When Madden 10 came out I played it every day.  I took my Patriots thru 16 years in my franchise.  I had several undefeated seasons and won many a Super Bowl.  Even though my team outmatched every team I faced, I still enjoyed playing the game.  When I picked up Madden 11, I started my franchise and played some games.  I'm 7-2 this season, which I can live with, but I'm just not excited to pickup the controller and play.  I guess what I'm trying to say is I enjoyed Madden 10 better.
     B. Playing against the Colts the other night I found another bug.  The Colts were in the Red Zone and ran a pass play on 3rd and long.  The WR ran a deep in but was running his "in" out of the back of the end zone.  Not just touching the white, both feet were in the white for several steps.  Manning threw him the ball and he came back into the endzone for the catch.  Yes he was in the endzone for the catch, but since he went OB he can't be the first player to touch the ball.  Results 7 points that should have given the Colts 4th and long and a FG try.

2. MLB2K10 - I still love this game.  I started a career as 3rd baseman in the Red Sox organization.  I played 1.5 seasons in AA, a few games in AAA and then made the move to Boston.  I'm now in my 5th year, we've won the World Series 3 of my 4 years and we have the best record in the Majors so far about 1/2 way into my 5th year.  All the stats I can control are maxed out at 99, but my clutch is at a 52 so my overall ranking is a 97 and I'm the #2 3rd baseman in baseball.  I can't get my clutch numbers up as I've only had 4 clutch moments in my career.  I've mentioned a few other minor complaints about MLB2k10 before so I will not rehash that again, but I do have a new one.  It seems that Red Sox management does not know how to sign players.  We have let our best players go and have not signed anyone to replace them.  The only players on the current team anyone would know are Becket, Pedroia and Victor Martinez.  Everyone else has less experience than I do and again I'm only in my 5th season.  How can they not resign Youkilis, Bard, Buchholz, Lackey, Lester, Papelbon, Matsuzaka, Okajima or Drew. I know they can't expect to keep everyone, but only 3 and Becket has aged poorly in the game.  I know as a team leader I can suggest the team go after certain players.  I have suggested a starting pitcher every year and not once have they brought that player in.  That being said, I still love this game and if you like baseball games you should be playing it.

3. It's been a busy couple weeks at work.  I work IT (Network and Systems Admin) for a small bank right outside of Atlanta.  We only have 7 branches and don't plan on growing that much as we want to keep that community bank feel.  The mortgage department however is growing like crazy.  That means new desktops, new laptops, new servers, new software, new networks and so forth.  On top of that, we are looking for ways to bring down costs and increase productivity.  Who's not, right?

4. One of the ways we are doing so is using VMware to deploy multiple virtual servers on fewer physical boxes.  We've been doing this for about a year now and it's working good.  The next step is a test I've been putting a lot of time into the past week. We are evaluating using VMware View to visualize users desktops.  In a nutshell users would sign onto a device which could be a PC or a thin client, then remote to a virtual desktop.  The idea is that no matter where the user is, as long as they have a corporate owned device with them, then can sign into their desktop.  Additionally since they are actually controlling a desktop that sits in our datacenter just about everything they do from Outlook to uploading documents is all happening in the same datacenter it runs across a gig network.  The speed of the users network only has to be fast enough to display the screen to them.  I'm very excited about this technology and can see it being a big benefit to us.

5. On that note, I have been having some issues trying to setup and work with the "composer" part of VMware View.  If anyone has used it before and would be willing to let me bounce some questions off them, please let me know.

xbox live Gold – followup

As Glen mentioned in his post, I too rarely play games online with the 360 any more. My son however is on it all the time. As such, not having a Gold Membership is really not an option for us. That does make me wonder about the Family Pack that Microsoft announced a little while back. It is suppose to be available in November. I wonder if it will be launching November 1st when then new pricing goes into effect. That also brings up the point of the Family Pack pricing. It is being advertised at $99, but also says "Enjoy four Gold memberships for the price of two".  I'm no mathematician, but based on the new pricing it can't be $99 and the price of 2.

Speaking of the Family Pack.  Has anyone seen anything that defines a "family"?  I definilty don't need 4 gold accounts, but between my son, myself, my nephew and my brother-in-law we could use all 4.

Xbox LIVE Gold price increase

I'm not sure if this is new news or not, but it's new to me. I received an email overnight last night from Microsoft telling me that there is going to be an increase in the price of Xbox Live Gold memberships. This was actually for one of my account that only used the 1 month trial membership on and never bought a Gold account (this 360 is used only as a media center extender). I have not gotten this email for any of my other accounts yet, but I have to assume they are coming.

Old Price New Price
1-Month Gold Subscription $7.99 $9.99
3-Month Gold Subscription $19.99 $24.99
12-Month Gold Subscription $49.99 $59.99

The email does mention you can save some money by renewing now via this page.

12 Month Gold membership starting November 1, 2010 $59.99
Lock in a low one-year price now $39.99
You save $20.00

Tomorrow’s draft

How in the world does Dan get the 2nd pick, Glen gets 3rd and I get LAST?  Thank God it's a snake draft.  And oh yea, 1st pick: My Brother-in-Law.  Looks like Craig is going to make some risky picks this year!

The best DVR?

I preordered back in April and it showed up today.  My CableCard will not be here until next Monday however.  What am I talking about?  My Ceton InfiniTV4 of course.  If you are not familiar with this device it is a PCIe card that holds a CabelCard from your cable provider and lets you record 4 shows in HD at the same time on your Windows 7 Media Center PC.  (endgadget review) That's right, 4 shows at once, some or all in HD and all recorded to the same location where you pick how much hard drive space you want to have.  No more hard drive limits set by your cable provider or Tivo.  And yes, since the PC is connected to the home network I can watch the shows on any PC that has a Media Center extender, such as an Xbox 360, connected to it.  You can actually have 5 extenders connected at the same time, so I could have 4 shows being recorded and watch yet a 5th show that has already been recorded.  This is the flexibility I've been looking for for years now.  Only 1 week of waiting left.  Of course, since I've said that, I better cross my fingers and hope everything goes according to plan.

My biggest Madden con yet

I wish I had this one on video.  The Ravens are pounding it down my throat;  They keep running up the middle for 5-15 yards per carry.  I just can't stop them.  After I punt the Ravens have the ball 1st and 10 on their 15.  I know a run up the middle is coming, so I call a dime, all blitz.  Sure enough here it comes, I'm controlling the MLB and get blocked to the left, but I see my SS coming up fast, so I figure he'll make the tackle for a short gain.  I figured wrong.  The SS gets about 3 yards away from the RB and turns 90 degrees, runs straight left and away from the RB.  It was like he was afraid of the RB and just ran away.  I don't know what was worse: The 85 yd TD run or my son laughing at the SS running away.  I guess the days of the Pats having Rodney Harrison at SS are truely over.
