Thursday notes

- Yesterday, I stumbled across a great article on Cracked.com which shows the 7 stories that the sports media writes about when there is nothing to write about that day.

I'm sure you won't be surprised by the types of articles that they find commonplace on a very slow sports day.

What amazes me is that Pulitzer prize winning newspapers will actually allow one of their columnists to write a column talking about how their QB performs when they use him in a game of Madden.

I can't even imagine doing something like that on a site such as this, let alone doing it for a professional news organization.

- Gamefly sent my copy of Lord of the Rings: War in the North yesterday and I have to say that I'm disappointed by it thus far.  I only spent an hour or so with it, but it just feels so very empty compared to some of Snowblind Studios previous efforts.

There is such a special place in my heart for Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance and I really hoped that this game could have close to as good, but sadly, that does not appear to be the case.

Having the camera so close to the action allows you to see a great deal more of the violent attacks and kills that you unleash upon the various Orcs and other creatures that you face, but it just doesn't feel right to be so close to the action when you're playing in an Action RPG.

Due to the fact that you're view of the battlefield is so narrow, there have been a few occasions already where I have thought that I was done fighting off the Orc horde and started to run around to attack barrels, only to find that the other two members of my party were still battling other enemies that I did not know where still around.

So, if you were thinking of picking it up... please rent it first.  It might be a fun hack and slash for a few hours... but I'm not really feeling all that great about the game.

- Just finished watching Season 2 of Dr. Who last night.

I really enjoy that show.  No idea why I didn't start watching it before now.  Thankfully Netflix has all 5 seasons via streaming and I can keep catching up.

Monday notes

- Finished up Batman: Arkham City on Friday night, but keep going back in order to finish up a few of the missions that I didn't complete.  I've debated going back and playing the New Game Plus mode, but I just don't know if I have it in me right now.

Also, this is definitely a spoiler, but it's most definitely the creepiest part of the game.  Don't click on the link if you want to keep an event of the game a secret.

- Amazing what 8 days will do.  The Badgers went into the Michigan State game looking like a national championship contender and left the Ohio State game looking like a team that won't be playing in a January bowl game.

What goes without saying is that if this team didn't have Russell Wilson, they would probably be a 4 or 5 win team at this point.  He has single handedly kept the team in the last two games, orchestrating some amazing drives to put the team in a position to get to overtime or win the game, but has been let down by bad coaching and poorly played defense.   Oh, and don't forget about the special teams unit that has had 2 punts and a field goal attempt blocked in the last 2 games.  Ugly stuff.

At least we still have the Packers to talk about up here.

- Thank you, Gamefly.  Lord of the Rings: War in the North and Uncharted 3 are on their way and should be here on Wednesday.

I know at least one other person who's going to be playing the PS3 version with me, so if anyone else gets that version let me know and we'll get some co-op gaming going with that version.

- That'll do it for today.  Have a great week.

Friday notes

- Not ashamed to admit it, I played Batman: Arkham City for 3 1/2 hours last night.  I really have to give the Rocksteady people credit as they have made an incredibly enjoyable game that I keep getting sucked into each and every night.   According to the game meter, I'm 40% done, but I have no idea if that's tracking all of the subquests and Riddler trophies.  I know that I've finished off a few side-boss missions and have completed those story lines, but I really hope that there will be plenty more in store... although, based on the story, I have my concerns about how much is remaining.

Having said that, still enjoying the ride.

- As we get closer to the release of the Playstation 24" 3D tv, I've been debating upgrading my PC monitor at home with a 3D monitor that I could use for PC gaming as well as for my PS3.

Earlier today I got an email about how I could get this Asus 27" monitor for $539... and I've just been fighting the urge to pick it up all day.

Has anyone spent any time with 3D gaming on the PC or PS3 side that can speak to the quality or how much they enjoy it?

It's tough to think of giving up a 40" screen for PS3 gaming, but it could be great to play some of the PS3 games in 3D.   As well as having a 3D monitor that my girls could watch some Disney movies on as well.

Thoughts?

- Don't know how many got a chance to see it last night, but I thought that the first two Beavis and Butthead episodes last night were pretty entertaining.  Of course, I was watching them at 1:00 a.m., so my need for sleep might have clouded my judgement a bit.

- Trying to put together a podcast tonight, so stay tuned for that.

- Have a great evening and weekend.

Monday notes

- Well, let's get this out of the way...

The Badgers clearly deserved to lose the game against the Spartans.  When you have a blocked field goal, blocked punt, and give up a safety, it's hard to say that you were the better team that day.

Having said that, a hail mary is a hard way to lose a game.  I only saw the video of the play a few times, and while it was hard to know for certain that the guy crossed the plane with the ball, I can't say that I was surprised that they lost.

Probably the biggest play of the game was the Wilson interception when the Badgers were up 14-0 in the first quarter.  Wisconsin was driving to go up 21-0, but the interception gave the Spartans new life and they took advantage.   If Toon runs the right route, there is no telling what could have happened.

I have to give the team credit for fighting back when down 14 points late though.  They showed a lot of heart in the 4th quarter.  Oh, well.  Gotta regroup and win out to play for the first Big Ten championship.  Maybe they'll get another shot at the Spartans... who knows?

- On Friday night, the Mrs. and I got a chance to see the Badger hockey team for the first time this year.  Man, that's one really young team.   On a roster of 25 skaters, they have 19 underclassmen... and only 1 senior.

They really out hustled the Sioux that night though and deserved the win.

I always enjoy seeing UW/UND games with my wife as she is a long time Sioux fan, so it's one of the only times that we're not cheering for the same team.   Stuff like that keeps a marriage lively, am I right?

- So, we're going to get a new NFL Blitz, without late hits?  Hmm... not sure I would be interested in that.  The old game was just so much more fun when you hammered guys after a big play.   It was a nice little bit of payback on your friends after a nice play or a score.   Without that... not sure how much fun the game will be.

- Not sure how many of you have tried out the service, but Onlive is running a promotion that allows you to buy your first game on the service for $1.  I have an account where I've activated a few of my Humble Bundle games and really debating picking up something like Deus Ex for a buck.

When I've played games on the system in the past, the lag hasn't been bad enough to cause any issues with the gameplay, but it's hard to say how a promotion like this might impact their server performance.

But when you're only paying $1 for a game, it's a risk worth taking.

- Arkham City continues to eat up all of my gaming time.  I've enjoyed dropping into the game and getting lost in my pursuit for more of the Riddler trophies as well as crusing around the city looking for thugs to beat up.

I do have to give them credit for the story as well.  I'm only 17% into the game, but have already run into Two Face, the Joker, Bane, the Penguin, and Mr. Freeze  (Along with several other baddies.)   I really wondered how well a story would work when you had that many guys involved, but they make it work really well.

- Lastly, the Packers didn't play their best game, but are 7-0 after beating the Vikings.  The player that surprised me the most was Christian Ponder.  He really showed some poise in the 4th quarter and kept the Vikings in the game by completing 1 3rd down pass after another.

I thought they reached when they drafted him, but he looked pretty good yesterday.

Worst play?  Bryan Robison's kick to TJ Lang's groin.  How he wasn't ejected from the game is beyond me.

Thursday notes

- Looking back at when I was a kid, I'm amazed at how many really difficult games I played from time to time.

Games like Mega Man or the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stick in my mind due to the fact that they were incredibly difficult games, but I really stuck with them over time because, well, they were the only games that I had at the time.  I couldn't just put them away and pick up one of any of the ten other games that I have sitting there at the moment and start playing them, because it was the ONLY game I had at the time.

So, when people told me I had to try out Dark Souls, I heard about how challenging it was, but thought it would be worth giving it a shot.  Soul crushingly difficult would be a more accurate description for the game, and after 2 or 3 hours of pointless struggling, I abandoned it because there were countless other games where I wouldn't want to throw my controller out the window sitting right next to me.  So, in the drawer it went, and that's where it still resides.

So, when I started to play the advanced AR missions on Batman: Arkham City, I had a very similar feeling to when I started to play Demon Souls, but I stuck with it... because this felt like something that was actually possible to complete.

The only thing that really kept me going was the fact that I knew that the entire game wouldn't be like that.  The missions, while very difficult and relying on crazy split second reaction time, would come to an end eventually.   That's what kept me going and when I got the trophy bing, I felt like I had really accomplished something.

In fairness, the missions only took me somewhere between 30 and 45 minutes... but it seemed like an eternity when you don't accomplish anything.

I do know now that I will never, ever, want to go back and complete them again though.  That's a certainty.

Having said that, the game is absolutely terrific and I can't wait to get the kids to bed each night so I can start beating the crap out of more lowlife characters in Arkham City.

- Punch a guy in the face and try to twist the head off of the opposing quarterback and get 1 game off.

What's funny is that the Big Ten doesn't even seem to mention the play where he jerked Denard Robinson's head around, the punch is all that gets him the suspension.

- Having said that about the suspension, I wish Gholston hadn't commited the actions because I'd like to see the Badgers play against the best team that Michigan State can put on the field.  The Badgers have a huge axe to grind for the game that they lost there last year and have to prove that they can beat a quality opponent on the road this year.

This week and next weeks game against Ohio State are the defining moments for the Badgers season, and you'd like to see them play them against the best that the other team can offer.

- One last Badger note.  Here's the average score for their games this year.

50.2 to 9.7

Ugh.

- The Jerome Harrison for Ronnie Brown trade wasn't the biggest trade that happened this week, but the fact that the trade was vetoed made it odd.  Now we know the reason why, Harrison has a brain tumor.

As was reported, this is a blessing in disguise for Harrison as neither he nor his team knew he had any issues like this.

Hopefully his treatment can begin quickly and he can start the recovery process.

- Have a good evening

Wednesday notes

- If you listened to last weeks podcast, you'd know that Dan and I were trying to convince Craig to pick up Batman: Arkham Asylum.   I can say without reservation that he should pick up Arkham City as well.  Damn, this game is fun.  While some of the Advanced Augmented Reality training segments are pissing me off a great deal, it's still a terrific game.

If you like games where you are Batman....

- What was funny about picking up Arkham City was the experience in doing a pre-order at Best Buy.  I walked in, picked up a copy of the game, walked to a register and tried to buy it.  Denied.  "You have to go to customer service to pick up a pre-order."

Wait in line at customer service, denied.  "You have to go back to the game department to pick that up."   Oh, and he took the game away from me at that point too.

Walk back to the game department and wait in line.  When I get to the front of the line, he takes my receipt and says, "Oh, you pre-ordered this yesterday.... this isn't going to be easy."   He spends 5 minutes looking for "my" copy of the game, then gives up and goes and picks one up off the shelf and rings me up.

All in all, the process took about 15 minutes... when I could have just picked up a brand new copy off of the shelf, walked to the register and left with the game in 2 minutes.

Remind me to not pre-order a game from them again...

- One of the things that I love about having Dan in a fantasy league is that he'll always find something to complain about.   Only Dan could complain about the scoring system, when it would actually have helped him win a game.  Now if he wants to complain that 300 yards passing should get you more points, I'd probably be on board with that.  But the QB touchdown points?   C'mon Dan.  In week 4, you lost by .20 and started a QB that got you 2.22 points.  This last week, you started a running back that didn't even play.   Not saying that there are many options out there... but when you start someone who didn't play... I can't take responsibility for that.

- Not too surprising to see Carson Palmer traded to the Raiders.  Just surprised to see that they gave up 2 -1st round picks to get him.   Now it just remains to be seen if Dan will complain about who gets him in the fantasy league.

- Lastly, OOTP v 12 has dropped to $19.99 for the World Series.  If you've been waiting to pick it up, this is as good of a price as you'll probably see for a while.

Monday notes

- Moving on to the Michigan State/Wisconsin game on Saturday, I hadn't seen this until this morning.

For the link impared, William Gholston for Michigan State jumped on a pile late against Michigan and wrenched Denard Robinson's head around, then punched another player in the head later.  Both events caught on camera.  Not really sure how he managed to not be ejected from the game, but it will be interesting to see how the Big Ten handles something like this.

In the past when players have been caught doing stuff like this, the team usually suspended them (like in the case of when OSU's Robert Reynolds choked Jim Sorgi of Wisconsin in 2003.)  Hopefully Mark Dantonio does the right thing and suspends him before the Big Ten has to get involved.

This is a huge game for both teams, and is the first big road test for the UW as they try to prove that they are one of the top teams in the country.

Should be a fun one on Saturday night.

- I've decided against picking up the NHL Gamecenter package.  While it would be awesome to see the Islanders, especially when they're playing as well as they have to start the year, spending $160 to do so just seems like too much at the moment.   Also, my wife said that it would be my Christmas present if I bought the package... and I guess I want to hold off for something better than that.

I can always catch the highlights later, I guess.

- Yesterday, I started to play Madden again after listening to Dan and Craig talk about it on the latest podcast and found that I was enjoying the game, with the major exception being the fact that I still get so tired of seeing linebackers jump up and knock so many passes out of the air.

I really tried to get out of the mindset of trying to run slant routes, but what I found is that running an offense, like the Packers do, is nearly impossible in the game play.

We'll see if things change all that much with the upcoming patch for the game.  Usually things don't get tweaked too much, but we might be surprised.

- There is a demo out on the Xbox marketplace for Kinect Sports Season 2.   I haven't seen which sports are included in the demo, but for those of you out there with a Kinect, give it a go.

- I think I've finally caved and have decided to purchase Batman: Arkham City tomorrow.  I have a $10 reward cert and $35 gift card to spend at Best Buy, so being able to pick up the sequel to a game that I absolutely loved (Arkham Asylum) seems like a win/win for me.

- Fairway Collector's Edition is still the game that is absorbing the majority of my gaming time right now though.  Simple, yet incredibly addictive gameplay with a sports feel.  Just a terrific game.

- Oh, and I am partial to Nelson Cruz of the Rangers due to the fact that he came up through the Brewers system, but my dislike for the Cardinals and Tony La Russa wins out as the main reason to pull for Texas this year.  As every sports fan should know, you never cheer for a team in your division to win the championship, other than your own.   (And that's my last baseball post for this season.  I'm sure that will make everyone happy.  heh.)

Wednesday notes

- It's funny, the first League Championship Series in 29 years and no one outside of Milwaukee and St. Louis really cares about it.   TV Ratings are at the lowest that they have ever been for the first two games of the series.

Tonight should be an amazing game (if it doesn't rain) with Gallardo pitching against Carpenter.

Both guys have been amazing in their last playoff starts and both have had issues with the other team in the past.  Hard to say what will happen, but I'm just hoping for a great game.

- Having said that, there is a part of me that is already at peace with the fact that the Brewers could lose in the playoffs and I wouldn't be all that upset about it, due to the fact that I was at that game last Friday.

Winning the NLCS and World Series would be amazing, but I really doubt that I'll be able to get to any of the games without mortgaging my own and my children's futures, and that's something that I really don't want to do.

I'm just trying to be reasonable and take in the fact that it's been an incredible season and I've had a lot of fun being at games and watching them play.  I'm hoping for more, but I'm glad to have the experiences that I've already had with the team.

- Yesterday the Gran Turismo 5 update came out and I grabbed the 1+ GB download... but didn't even bother with any races.  After I completed the download it was already 10:30 and I don't have my wheel put together at the moment.  Hopefully I'll have some time to give it a go soon.

- Speaking of steering wheels, I've doubled my efforts again to look for a wheel stand.  Some of the DIY stands that you can find racing sites are pretty amazing, but I'd like something that could support the Logitech G27 and Microsoft Wireless Wheel without needing a ton of time to switch between the two.

I'd consider the DIY stands... but I'm pretty much useless with tools unless I have a really good set of instructions in front of me.  Guess, I'll see what I can find.

- The other reason that I didn't have too much ambition to play a game last night was because of the fact that I've been watching a bunch of Doctor Who episodes on Netflix.  No idea how I haven't gotten into the show before because each episode that I have seen thus far has been pretty damn good.  I'm in the middle of season 2 and really dig the series.

If you're looking for some fun SciFi to dig into, you can't go wrong with this.

- Back after the game tonight.

10Oct/110

Monday notes

- Sorry for not posting over the weekend, but I was in a state of post game euphoria that took about 50-some hours to wear off.

I've never been to a winner-take-all game before and had it end like that one did.  Absolutely remarkable.

- Moving on to game 2 tonight between the Brewers and Cardinals, I'd just like to see Marcum get back to pitching as well as he did before the last month of the year.  Probably a lot to ask, but you'd like to really see a good start from him this evening.

- Talking with a few Packers fans today, it seems like all of them were nervous in the first half.  I was sitting with my wife watching the game and realized that the offense really hadn't even gotten going yet and that there was too much time to get worried... which is weird, because I always get antsy when the Packers are behind.  I guess I've just seen this team do so much on offense of late that it would be weird to see them lose.  Strange to say, but it's what I think about this team right now.

They'll lose eventually, but the way that they play of late, it just looks like it will take a pretty special effort from the other team to do so.

- I started playing FIFA 12, as I got a copy from Gamefly, and my career with Lionel Messi is off to a great start with a goal in my first game.

I know that most people wouldn't take one of the top 2 or 3 players in the world and use them for their career... but I'm not that great at soccer games, so I need every advantage I can get.

- That'll just about do it for now.  It was a crazy sports weekend... and I almost need the day off tomorrow that the Brewers get as much as they do.  Ok, not as much as them... but still... lots of sports and not enough time to really enjoy it.

Wednesday morning notes

- So, on a lark, I rented Driver: San Francisco via Gamefly and I have to say that I'm stunned at how good this game is.   I'm sure you've heard a bit about the game, but I couldn't have imagined how much fun it is to be able to leap from car to car causing so much havoc throughout the city.

This is the first time that I can recall being this pleasantly surprised about a game in a very long time.   This is also one of the first games in forever that I thought about buying from Gamefly without even thinking about the cost.  It's just that much fun.  If you have a rental spot open for Gamefly, throw this one in your queue.  You won't be disappointed.

- As promised by Amazon, I got my copy of Ico/SoTC yesterday and started playing through Ico again.  What stunned me, other than how visually impressive the game is, is how much I remembered of a game that I played only once about 8 years ago.   I couldn't believe how quickly the game came back to me.  I made it to my first "couch" relatively quickly and saved it so that I can come back to it in a few days.  I don't want to tear through the game as quickly as possible, I want to enjoy it as much as I can, for as long as I can, before I dive back into Shadow of the Colossus again.

- What can you say about what Prince Fielder did last night for the Brewers?  He almost, by himself, won the game for them with 3 homeruns and driving in 5 runs.  That win allowed this years team to tie the all time franchise record with 95 wins.  John Axford tied for the league lead in saves, Braun is percentage points behind Reyes for the batting title, and Fielder is tied for the home run lead (and is 3 behind for the RBI lead.)  It's a remarkable year for the Brewers... and I can't wait to be there for the first home game in the playoffs.

With Arizona's amazing 6 run bottom of the 10th inning last night, that means that the Brewers have to win to get home field advantage in the first round.  Hopefully Greinke can get it done today and then the team can start to focus on either Arizona or Atlanta coming to town.

- Lastly, I got two trade offers to improve my QB situation.  Now I just have to decide on which one will be best for my team.... Nice to see that kind of action in the fantasy league.  Hope we can keep that up throughout the year.

Madden NFL 12 notes

Bear with me, as this is probably one of the longest posts that I've ever done... but here we go.

I initially wondered why the embargo for Madden was 8 a.m. CST on the Friday before the game launches... as that's pretty unusual timing.  Then I remembered the Season Pass.  TONS of impressions will be out about the game by around Noon, as anyone with $25 bucks will have had a few hours with the title.  I guess that gives me a few hours before everyone can jump in with their thoughts, so here goes.

The first thing that I did when I was working on writing up my thoughts for Madden NFL 12 was to go back and look at what I wrote about last years title.

One of the biggest issues that I had with the game was the kickoff coverage. Well, that seems to have been resolved by the fact that more often than not most kicks will not be returned.  If they are?  The team will get the ball right around the 20.  The blocking is just as bad as it was last year.   Maybe there's a chance that I'm really terrible at kick returning, which is highly possible, but again no blockers seem to want to try and engage any player that is coming down the field.  Oh, well.  I beat this topic to death last year,  so let's move on.

Next up, last year I spent a good bit of time talking about the Madden Moments.  They are back this year, but there are only 5 available right out of the box and, as a Packer fan, none of them were really all that compelling to me.  (Eagles vs. Packers - beat the Packers, Bucs vs. Cardinals - beat the Cardinals, Eagles vs. Giants - come back from 31-10 down with Eagles, Jets vs. Colts - beat the Colts, Ravens vs. Steelers - Beat the Ravens.)  Since they really haven't changed that much there, I left that feature alone.

- Looking at the changes for this years game, the one thing that I would say that they spent a considerable amount of time on was the presentation of the game.  Every team has an introduction moment at each of their home games and if that sort of thing matters to you, they've really done a great job there.

A lot has been done to make the game look more like it is an actual TV broadcast rather than a game that you are playing.  For example, the default camera on the kickoff is that of a side shot of the kickoff taking place.  You can press a button to get the "default camera angle" but as soon as the play begins it reverts back to the broadcast style camera.    Other elements in relation to the presentation that have been enhanced are the 3D grass, lighting that changes as the game goes on, and uniform degradation as the game goes on.

- In the actual gameplay side of things, the biggest addition is that of the new collision system that has been integrated.  If you've played NCAA 12 and have seen some of the more violent tackles that are taking place in the game, you'll feel comfortable with what has been changed in Madden as it has a very similar feel.   It's not a good or bad change, there are just more hits that will make you wonder how the guy either (a. hung onto the ball or b. is still conscious.)  Sure there are regular type tackles, but the violent ones really stick out in my mind.

Going further into the gameplay, I still have run into far too many situations where I've been running the ball behind my fullback and have watched him run right past a linebacker to try and block a safety 6 yards further down the field.  What's funny is that running, in my experience, still isn't all that hard... even with issues like that.  I'm only playing on All-Pro to this point, but even with flawed blocking logic... you can still do a much better job on the ground than the CPU.   Speaking of the CPU running ability, I have yet to see the computer even approach 100 yards rushing in a game.  The closest that I've seen, for the CPU, is 58 yards in 7 minute quarters.  As for me, I busted off 225 (in a single game) with Ryan Grant for the Packers, and have had a good deal of 100 yard games to go along with that.

One beef that I have with the game (that has not been addressed for years) has to do with clock management.  Again, with or without gameflow, the CPU seems to have no idea as to what to do when there is a 2:00-minute drive or a clock killing situation.   Here's a great example.  I was beating the Saints 45-7 in the first game of the year with the Packers.  There was about 1:30 seconds left in the game, with the ball on their own 20, and on the first play the Saints ran the ball (which is exactly what they should be doing.)  They gained 2 yards and then proceeded to go no-huddle and start throwing the ball.  The second pass was intercepted and returned for a TD to put the Packers up 52-7.  What did they do when they got the ball back with about 0:40 seconds left?  The same thing... a single run, then no-huddle on the next play.  That kind of stuff is just so frustrating to me.  Sure, I love to beat a team down as much as the next guy, but c'mon....

- Probably the coolest two feature additions in gameplay are the implementation of a receiver specific pump fake (this is an awesome feature that will really add a bit to player vs. player games) and a diving catch button.  I feel that those two features add a lot to the gameplay.   Along with the pump fakes, they've added some new routes such as the sluggo, in/out n up, and hitch/curl n go and you can see how that feature becomes a big one.   The CPU doesn't bite on the fakes every time, but enough so that it makes it worth your while to use them.

- When I heard that one of the new features was called Dynamic Player Performance...the first thing I thought of was Bases Loaded II and how players would go hot or cold during the year.  (I guess I'm just an old gamer that looks way back when I think of a similar feature.)   If you listened to our interview in regards to this feature, it's a concept that seems interesting... but limited in it's implementation.  Hot and Cold streaks can ONLY last 3 games before a player reverts back to his normal rating levels.  I guess that's a way to keep people from being frustrated at a player that sucks for a long time, but it doesn't seem as realistic to me.

Along with the streaky-ness of a player, there are various traits that certain players have or can gain over time.  From the interview, this system seems like it's a "you have it or you don't" kind of thing where a player could have a trait buried in their ratings waiting to be unlocked or they will never be anymore than they are, regardless of how great you play with them.  Maybe I misheard what he said, but that's the gist of what he was getting across to me.   I'm torn as to whether I believe that  players could become totally dominant if you are in charge of them, or could be nothing more than an average player regardless of what you do with them.  I'll have to think more on that.

- In the franchise mode, the big changes have to do with the 75 player roster coming into the preseason, so you have to manage (or have the CPU handle) cuts of players, the scouting system, and  the Free Agency system.

As far as the cuts go, you don't see the full rankings for a rookie player that you're evaluating, so you have to guess as to how good you think they might be before you cut them.  It's an interesting concept, but unless you're ultra focused on the performance of your 3rd lineman in a preseason game, you're going to have a hard time knowing if you're cutting a sleeper player or someone who you just haven't seen enough of yet.

As far as scouting is concerned, you have the ability to pick 20 players that you want to evaluate that will be coming into the next draft class (as far as I could tell it would only be college seniors that you're evaluating during the regular season.)  Once the season is done, then you move onto the combine and you can scout either the same 20 players (and get more information on them) or another 20 players to get a bit more information on them.  After that, you have Pro Days where you can get a bit more info on players, then finally you have individual workouts where you can get all of the ratings for 5 players that you're really interested in.

What I didn't like about the system was that it was really hard to find a sleeper player for your team.  You're totally guessing based 0n the initial 20 players as to what needs your team might have and what player you might evaluate.  After that, you have to throw all of your recruiting time into those guys and if it doesn't pan out... you've pretty much wasted all of your scouting efforts.  Again, as I said in the interview, perhaps someone will come up with a great tutorial of a way to really work the system... but for me... I found the process limiting and frustrating.

Lastly, you have the Free Agency changes.  The free agent system takes place in an eBay bidding style of auction.  As soon as free agency starts, teams start bumping up the initial amount that a player is asking for.  Each player has a set amount of time that they will wait for bids, so you need to really know ahead of time what positions you're looking to fill and how much money you can commit to them.

Two things that I found interesting about this mode.  You can back out of the free agency mode at any time (and stop the clocks) to go back and look at your team to evaluate what you need...because you can't do it from the free agency screen.   Second, it seemed to be pretty easy to sneak in at the absolute last second and outbid the CPU teams that were bidding on certain players.   Maybe I just got lucky with that, but it seemed like the thing to do was to identify your team need and then steal the guy at the last second if you really want him.  Perhaps other people will have different experiences with this, but that's what I saw.

- Beyond that, there were no changes made to the Online Franchise mode.  What they have done is to create a partnership with myLeagueManager.net to flesh out more of the system, but I haven't had a chance to see how well any of that will work.

Also, they have added the online community feature where you can be a part of, up to 5, communities where all of the rules and sliders for the game are set and you will play against a group of people that have only been allowed into that community.  That's an interesting concept and one that I think we might make use of here.  Set the rules for Sportsgamerblog.com and see how everyone does with those rules.

Lastly, the Madden Ultimate Team feature is back.  For the life of me, I just don't get this mode, but if you do... there is now the ability to trade your cards that you've acquired.  There you go.

- My thoughts?  It's a lot like last years game with some pleasant additions, but neglecting things that really have bothered me in the past (A.I. for blocking, and horrible clock management.)

I cannot deny that the game is fun to play, but it's just frustrating to me to see a game that is still struggling with fixing some of the basic problems that they have had in the game for the past few years.

I can see that it is a game that I will play for a few days or weeks, but I just don't know how much fun I'll have with it over the long haul, as those nagging issues just irritate me more and more as time goes on.

There you have it, 2,100+ words on Madden NFL 12.  Feel free to drop an email or a comment to let me know if you have more questions or thoughts.

Quick Thursday notes

- Brewers lose, Cards lose.  Magic number 22.

- Wing Commander 1 and 2 are on GOG.com for $5.99.  Even though I have the games on CD right here, it's tempting to pick them up for easy play on any PC without a CD.

- I started playing Deus Ex: Human Revolution last night on my PS3 at 8:30.  At 11:45, I realized that I was still playing and had to be up at 5:45.  It's incredibly good.  Much better than I would have thought.

- I'll be posting my thoughts and impressions on Madden NFL 12 tomorrow morning at 8:00 CST when the embargo breaks.  No hints about what I think until then.

- 2 spots left in the fantasy football league.  If you haven't signed up by 5:00 tomorrow, I'm going to run with a 14 team league.

- Off to the pool with my daughter.  Have a good day.

Monday notes

- Man, that was a weekend where you had to feel bad for the Pirates.   Outside of Friday night, the Brewers get a 1-0 win on Saturday afternoon... in a game where the Pirates had a leadoff triple in the 9th, but couldn't drive him home, and then the Brewers got a run in the 8th after trailing 1-0 all day, after Nyjer Morgan takes first on a wild pitch after striking out for the 3rd out... then having Braun drive in the tying run, and finally winning in the bottom of the 10th on a sacrifice fly by Morgan.

Just a crazy weekend, but if you have great pitching you can win just about every game... and that's what Milwaukee has done, winning 15 of their last 17.

- I took my girls to see Winnie the Pooh on Saturday and I was really happy to see how much my 4-year old loved it.  It's the first movie I can recall taking her to that she was really focused on.  She never got fidgety or told me that she wanted to go.  Maybe it was because the film was just a touch over 1 hour long.

Still, it's always great to have an experience like that with your kids.

- As far as gaming is going, I went very retro this weekend as I started playing Deus Ex for the first time (and only played through the first mission on Liberty Island,) played through the first 3 missions on X-Wing (easily one of my top 10 games of all time, along with Tie Fighter... which is in the top 2 or 3,) and then finished it up with some time on the Complete Final Fantasy IV collection on the PSP.

All in all, it was a fun gaming weekend.

- Along with gaming, I got a chance to try out disc golf for the first time yesterday.   Man, that is a hell of a lot harder than it looks.  For the life of me, I could never get the damn disc to just fly straight, which led to me only having a single par over 18 holes.

I was lucky enough to borrow a driver from one of the people I played with so that I can practice with that around the house.  Hopefully I'll figure it out before the next time.

- Along with the disc golf, I've also really started to train for my next triathlon which will be taking place on September 18th.  What really scares me about it (other than the swim... because I'm just awful in those segments) is the fact that I looked at the elevation chart for the bike segment....1343 feet of climbing.... along with 1327 feet of descent.   My Hybrid definitely isn't going to pass muster for that.  Still, I'll have to head up there and try out the route to just see how badly it's going to punish me.

- I sat through most of the Packers 1st preseason game against Cleveland on Saturday night because at the beginning I was excited to see some football... then after watching some of the 3rd string players play... I was reminded how terrible pre-season football is and how sad it is that fans have to pay for that.

But remember... everyone was a winner because of the labor issues... everyone except the fans.

- Lastly, still looking for a few more Fantasy Football players.  I think we're down to 2 or 3 openings.

Let me know if you want in.  Remember, winner gets a game of their choice... that usually brings in a few entries.  heh.
