Saturday notes

- Another crazy week at the office that didn't allow for much time for posting.  In about 2 weeks things should start settling down.  Installing a Cisco phone system and having to train all of the users how to use it, is a challenging process to handle and it's making me spend a great deal of time at work preparing for the whole cut over.  Can't wait to get back to normal life activities again.

- I received my copy of Grand Slam Tennis 2 for the PS3 on Thursday and will be digging into it later today (as soon as my Move and Navigation controllers are fully charged.)  I haven't looked at any reviews for the game to this point, so I have no idea what people have said about it.  I kind of like it that way.

- Thinking of taking my daughters to see, "The Secret World of Arrietty" over the weekend as I've always been a fan of Studio Ghibli works.  The first one I can recall seeing was 'My Neighbor Totoro' when I was around 18 or 19 years old.   Whenever my nephew would come over to spend a night with my parents, we would sit up and watch the movie with him and he absolutely loved it.

My girls have seen Ponyo and a few of the other films, but this will be their first chance to see one of them in the theater.  Should be a fun Sunday morning activity.

- Some decent gaming deals to be had at Amazon today (actually, they've been running through most of the week... but I'm just catching up now.)  Dungeon Defenders for $2.99 (Steam), FIFA Soccer 12 (Origin) for $17.99, and Burnout Paradise: Ultimate Box (Origin) for $4.99.

Sadly, I have most of the titles they have out there for either the PS3 or 360, but if you don't have them, there are some good deals to be found.

- If you didn't catch Archer this week, you missed a fantastic episode.  Not many other shows on TV where you will hear someone talk about "Creepy, old people, bondage, sex police."

Absolutely love that show.

- Have a great rest of the weekend.

Monday night notes

If you were an alien visiting our planet and saw the massive news reaction to Whitney Houston's death, you would have thought she cured cancer or something based on the amount of news coverage for her death.  Good lord....

The only impact that she ever really had on my life was the fact that I had friends make me go see the Bodyguard when I was in high school.  That's two hours I'll never ever get back because of her.

Moving on....

- I had a sensational time up at the pond hockey championships over the weekend.  The team I was up there with went 1-2, but the results weren't the real reason we were there.  More than anything we're just a group of guys that want to get together and have a fun weekend road trip and it was definitely that.  Wouldn't have missed it for the world.

- Hoping to get my hands on Grand Slam Tennis 2 tomorrow.  I'm always a sucker for tennis games.  Don't know what it is, but they're always a lot of fun for me.

- I need to try and get a rental for UFC Unleashed 3 as well as I did enjoy the demo, but wasn't able to get connected with the PR people for an interview and all that.  Such is life.

- Lastly, one of my friends got a chance to see F.Stokes this weekend in Madison.  He did this video a little while ago here and it's a pretty damn good song.  Figured I would share it.

- What classic matches are included in the game and whether or not new classics will be able to be added

- How fun it was to deal with working with John McEnroe for his various parts in the game

- How realistic the career mode is (whether or not you will be able to jump right into playing the Grand Slam tournaments with your created player)

Thursday night notes

-Man, it's Thursday night and this is the first time I've had a chance to get to the PC since Monday.  Work has been incredibly crazy this week.  I've had about 1 hour to play Skyrim this week and that about sums up all of the gaming time I've had.  Weekend is coming up soon, hopefully that'll mean some time for relaxation.

- One of the things that you have to worry about when a new platform is released is that the titles on older platforms will start to get neglected.  That certainly looks to be the case with MLB12: The Show for the PS3.   Removing franchise features from the console version so that you can spend more time working on the PSVita version?  Um.. yeah, that's not a big win for the rest of us.

Considering the fact that online play for The Show has been terrible for the last few years and they're still not really addressing all of the issues there, it's just hard to look for much improvements in this years game.

- I have to agree with Bill Harris in his feelings about the rumor of Microsoft eliminating the ability to play used games in games for their new console.  As much as I would like to see Gamestop reigned in... I don't want retail markets being the only ones that control the pricing for games.  You could look at titles only dropping $10 to $20 each year after release.   That would absolutely suck for gamers on a budget.   If Microsoft tries this, they will kill their next console before it even gets off the ground.

- Congratulations to Prince Fielder (and sadly, Scott Boras) for making the deal that they did to send him to Detroit.  He gave Brewers fans some great years and some absolutely terrific memories.  I really hope that he plays incredibly well there.

- Lastly, don't know if you saw this, but the play made by the ballboy at the Australian Open today definitely deserves a look from everyone.  Crazy reflexes there.

Kinect Sports: Season 2 impressions

When I got home last night I tried out Kinect Sports: Season 2 which had just arrived via Gamefly.   If I had to sum up the game in one word it would be 'Ugh.'

The game consists of 6 different sports (Football, Golf, Baseball, Darts, Skiing, and Tennis.)

Golf and Skiing were probably the only two of the sports that were actually enjoyable to play though, although Golf seemed to be very easy, as I hit a 160 yard chip in eagle on my first shot.   As for Skiing, you tuck for speed and shift side to side to make it through your gates.  Both did a decent job of motion detection and could have been fun to play with others.

Now let's move onto the rest...

Football - Pick your play from 1 of 8, either by hand gesture or by saying the name of the play, then duck under center (by squatting in front of the TV with your hands out,) and say "Ready, Hike" (or wait 5 seconds.)  Then once the ball is snapped, you stand up and wait for a green icon to appear above any one of your three receivers.   Once the receivers is open, then you making a throwing motion that points towards who you want to throw to.  After that you run in place until he is tackled or scores.    Basically the game involves talking, waiting, making a throwing motion, and then running in place.   You don't do anything on the defensive side of the ball, instead you watch a drive summary for the other team.

Darts - This game had the potential to be a lot of fun, and could have been a great multiplayer game, but I had terrible control issues in the game that caused it to be more frustrating than anything else.  You hold your arm up in front of you like you are aiming a dart, then pull your hand back and mime a throwing motion.   When it worked, it was fun.  The problem that I ran into was that the aiming marker on the screen kept jumped all over the place.  My initial aim would be at the 20's, then all of a sudden the reticle would be in the bottom left of the board, then it would jump back to the 20's, then to another part of the board.  After 1 match, it became too frustrating to want to continue with.

Tennis - If you haven't seen this video from Kotaku, you don't need to do anything other than to hold your hand out to hit the ball.  Sure you can step into a shot and swing to generate more power, but for the most part, you can just wait for the CPU to make a mistake.  I also had some issues with Tennis due to the fact that my character would swing when I didn't move my arm or it wouldn't detect my foot moving forward to provide power for a shot.  This game mode alternated between frustrating and just plain boring, once you find that you don't even have to move your arm to hit the ball.

Baseball - Batting involves making a baseball swinging motion at the screen and timing your swing to hit the pitch.  If you hit early, you can pull the ball to left field, or wait to hit to right.  After you hit the ball, if the fielder doesn't have a play on the ball, your player will automatically run to 2nd or 3rd.  If the fielder is closer to the ball he (or she) will either make the catch or you will have to race to the base to beat the throw.  With this game (or football, for that matter,) was I able to determine the appropriate speed at which to run in place to run faster.  It seemed that no matter how fast I ran, I was never able to really alter the speed at which they ran.

As far as pitching is concerned for Baseball, you choose which arm you throw with for each batter by sticking out a right arm to be right handed, or the left arm to be left handed.  Then the catcher will prompt you with information such as, Joe doesn't like fast throwing left handers.  From that information, you try to mimic the instructions in order to best the batter.  Multiple problems came into play with this due to the fact that sometimes when you would stick out your arm to determine which arm you were going to throw with and it would detect that as a throwing motion and the game would then make a pitch.   Also, the detection of arm angle and speed seemed to be very erratic as I could never get the game to detect the same pitch consistently even if I used the exact same motion.

Before you say something about whether or not there might have been an issue with my Kinect that was causing all of the erratic movements, I spent time with the tuning application in between a few of the games and found that the system was detecting my body frame and, for lack of a better term, skeletal grid without any issues.   I was in a room that was lit from overhead without any back lighting behind me that could have skewed the camera.

Every minute that I played the game became a minute that I was more and more frustrated with the controls.

The only really redeeming aspect of the game was how well the voice controls seemed to work.  There were a few issues now and again, but for the most part, if you saw it on the screen, you could do it.  Although if you have all these voice controls, it would be nice to be able to say "Xbox: Go to Dashboard" to exit a game.

If you have young kids, they may enjoy this take on some of our favorite sports games, but my advice for adults would be to stay away from this title.

Monday morning notes

- Well, I'm certainly glad that the Brewers road trip is over.  They managed to score 12 runs in 10 games and pretty much totally embarrassed themselves throughout the trip.  Errors everywhere, poor baserunning, and absolutely no hitting.  (.176 average for the team on the trip.)

Ugh.  Flat out... ugh.  Terrible stuff.

Thankfully Greinke pitches tonight and maybe something good will come of that.

- Considering the fact that I'm not really a fan of NBA basketball, I actually wanted to watch some of game 4 from the Mavericks and Lakers... as it's just nice to see Phil Jackson and Kobe Bryant get a beat down.

For a guy who is considered a real zen sort of guy... he doesn't really give his players that sort of play style as Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum got tossed for, very ugly,  flagrant fouls.  Is there a worse way for a coach to go out?  Looking like you completely lost your team?  Another ugh.

Every time I try to give myself a chance to watch some of the NBA, it makes me want to stay away.  Games like that... it's pretty obvious as to why I don't go back all that often.

- I was pretty tempted to get out and see Thor.  Anyone get a chance to see it this weekend and have a brief review?  I am still stunned to see that Kenneth Branaugh is the director for the film.  To go from Hamlet... to Thor... seems odd.. and strangely appropriate all at the same time.  (Danish... and Norse... am I alone here?)

- As far as sports games go, we have Virtua Tennis 4 coming out this week... and I don't have a slot open in my Gamefly queue.  Damn.  I wanted to see how that matched up against Top Spin 4.

- Nice to see Sony is finally offering us some credit card protection to go along with the free month of Playstation Plus and a free game.  The whole thing has been terribly handled from the get go and that is really all there is to say about it.  Now I just want the damn service back up again so I can play some co-op of Portal 2... even though I could just as easily play it on the PC.

- Lastly, the Stanley Cup playoffs have been amazing... outside of the Eastern conference, which ended in two sweeps.  The Western conference matchups have been terrific hockey games.  2 more-Game 6's coming up over the next two days.  Gotta love it.

Thursday morning notes

- Gotta like how the Brewers are playing right now.  After starting 0-4, they have won 6 of their last 7.   Tonight, Marcum pitches 7 strong innings of shutout baseball, Prince hits a big 3-run homer, and Tony Plush... well... he does this.

Once they get Greinke and Corey Hart back, this team could be pretty dang good.  Gotta love April optimism in baseball.

- In other good news, Eutechnyx is really impressing me with the work they are putting in for the Nascar 2011 patch.  If you take a look over at their forums, you can see that they have most of the issues that have been reported resolved.  Hopefully the patch will be out in a few weeks.  The game really needs some of the things that they are fixing, but if they get it right, it should be a damn impressive racing game.

- I played a bit more Top Spin 4 last night and ran into an annoyance.  At the end of my 3rd season in the game, I was qualified for Master tournaments and finished in the top 8 rankings.  When you do that, you get invited to the ATP Championship event at the end of the year.  Throughout all of the Master tournaments (not Grand Slam events) I destroyed all of the competition... whether it was Nadal or Federer or anyone else... I whupped them up good.

The way that the Championship is configured, you have 3 matches that you have to play against players that are in your bracket.  I beat all 3 guys without any issues, winning both sets in all 3 matches (3-0 and 3-0.)

I make it to the semi-finals and face off against Federer and all of a sudden he's a stud.  He's hitting every line, crushing every serve and he beats me in a 3 set tiebreak... but the match wasn't really all that close.

What bothers me about it is the fact that the game had the difficulty ramped way the hell down all the way until this one match.  If you want to ramp up the difficulty slowly so that you get prepared for a big final match, that's fine... but if you  turn the difficulty level from 0 to 11 in one match... that's annoying as hell.

I guess I'll see how the Grand Slam events go in this season, but I am pretty annoyed about how the difficulty has been handled to this point.
